Dickinson Holds on to Edge McDaniel, Clinch Playoff Berth

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kelsey Muir recorded three goals to lead Dickinson to an 8-7 Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse victory over McDaniel and into the upcoming conference tournament on Wednesday.

The Red Devils (9-6, 5-3 CC), who trailed 4-2 at halftime after four straight goals by the Green Terror (8-7, 4-4 CC), reeled off four straight of their own to take a 6-4 lead 10:29 into the second half and held on for the one-goal victory.

Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led McDaniel with three goals while Leanne Hollinger (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made 15 saves in goal for the Green Terror.

The win also gives Dickinson the upper hand on the No. 4 seed and hosting rights for the first-round game next Wednesday. A McDaniel win and Muhlenberg victory over Washington on Saturday will set up a rematch between the Green Terror and Red Devils in Carlisle.

McDaniel concludes the regular season at home against Bryn Mawr on Saturday. A win in that game ensures the Green Terror a playoff spot. A multitude of other scenarios also exist where McDaniel earns the fifth and final playoff spot.

Sunnie Ko started the 6-minute, 54-second flurry that saw Dickinson turn its two-goal halftime deficit into a two-goal advantage.

An Alysa Crellin marker at the 24:55 mark knotted the game at 4-all before Muir finished an Amanda West feed from behind the cage to give the visitors a one-goal lead just a minute and a half later.

Abby Larson stretched the lead to two with a free-position goal.

Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) trimmed the deficit to one with 17:47 to play.

Muir completed her hat trick with 6:52 remaining to stretch the lead back to two but Baer countered two minutes later with her 69th tally of the season.

Lexie Kob pushed the lead to 8-6 with 2:36 showing but a Jennifer Stone (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) free-position goal with 14.8 seconds on the clock made it a one-goal game.

Stone won the ensuing draw control but the Green Terror could not get a potential game-tying shot off in the waning seconds to force overtime.

Muir and Ko staked Dickinson to a 2-0 lead before the first 10 minutes of the game had elapsed before McDaniel controlled the remainder of the first half.

Lindsey McDonald (Germantown, Md./Damascus) finished a Ferruzzi feed at the 19:55 mark before two Baer goals 21 seconds apart gave the hosts their first lead of the game with 12:39 showing.

Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) found the back of the net with 1:37 to play in the first half to give McDaniel a two-goal lead at the break.

Dickinson finished with a 30-24 advantage in shots, including outshooting the hosts by an 18-12 margin in the decisive second half.

In a sloppy game played in a steady rain, the two teams combined for 55 turnovers and 47 fouls.

Game time on Saturday is 12:00 p.m.
