Susquehanna Falls to Ursinus

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna University's sophomore midfielder Ryan Oakes (North Yarmouth, Maine/Cheverus) was outstanding in winning 13 of 17 faceoffs and collecting a game-high 10 ground balls, but Susquehanna lost a non-conference men's lacrosse game to visiting Ursinus College, 11–7, at Sassafras Fields on April 15.

Freshman attack Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led Susquehanna (5–9 overall) with two goals and added one assist. Senior midfielder Greg Norris (St. Catharines, Ontario/Denis Morris) was the other Crusader with multiple points, as he tallied one goal and one assist against Ursinus (4–8 overall).

Scoring one goal each for SU were freshman attack Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison), junior midfielders Tom Jakubowski (Royersford, Pa./Spring–Ford Area) and Fred Morse (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) and freshman midfielder Jake Griffith (Wye Mills, Md./Easton). Sophomore defender Jimmy Warburton (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) assisted on Breakey's second goal, which was the last score of the game.

The contest was very competitive with Norris and Morse both scoring highlight-reel goals. Ursinus netted the game's first three scores, but Norris tied the score at 3 when we intercepted a Bears pass and beat the goalkeeper for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season. Norris also leads the 2009 Crusaders with 17 assists and 39 points.

Ursinus then scored the next two, but Morse made it 5–4 with 1 minute, 11 seconds left in the second quarter when he dove full out to smack in a rebound for his eighth goal this year.

The score remained 5–4 at halftime, but the Bears notched the first three goals of the second half to get some breathing room. SU got the next two, but Ursinus responded with the next three again to put the game away.

Susquehanna's freshmen Anthony Maiorella (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and Bill Davis (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) each played one half in goal. Davis took the loss by allowing the five first-half goals. Maiorella made six saves in the final 30 minutes.

Both teams picked up 29 ground balls. SU outshot the Bears, 29–23.

Next Game for Susquehanna: Saturday, April 18, vs. USMMA (Landmark Conference game – Senior Day), 12:00 p.m.
