Last-Minute Goal Pushes Cazenovia Past Keuka

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. Freshman Christy Foster (Canton, NY/Hugh C. Williams) scored a goal with 1:08 remaining in regulation to break a 6-6 tie and give the Cazenovia College women's lacrosse team a 7-6 victory over the Keuka College Storm Saturday afternoon in a battle of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) unbeatens.

The Wildcats now own sole possession of first place in the league with a 4-0 record, and improved to 10-1 on the season. Keuka now sits at 3-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall.

Junior Courtney Caldwell (Black River, NY/Immaculate Heart) led the Wildcats offense with three goals, all of which came consecutively in the first half. Sophomore Nicole Kimmel (Rome, NY/RFA) recorded two tallies and also registered an assist. Senior Erin Clinton (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge-Guilford) added a goal to round out the scoring and fellow senior Lauren Paul (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) contributed an assist.

Keuka led 2-1 with 12:17 gone by in the first half when the Wildcats ripped off four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead. The Storm's Brenna Leach (Rochester, NY) notched an unassisted goal with 47 seconds left to play to pull Keuka within two, 5-3, going into the break.

Keuka was the aggressor offensively in the second half, as they scored three unanswered goals to start the half to take a 6-5 lead and the momentum. Cazenovia stayed with it and tied the game up on a clutch goal by Clinton with 3:36 remaining.

After the goal, Keuka won the draw, but turned it over on their end 43 seconds later without a shot attempt. Following the successful clear, Caldwell rifled a shot that went wide right and sophomore Cassandra Gazeley (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) scooped up the ground ball. Seconds later, Foster netted her third game-winning goal of the season. Cazenovia won the draw and held the ball until the final buzzer sounded.

Keuka was led by Brandy Shafer's (Rochester, NY) three goals. Three other players scored one goal each for the Storm. Freshman Cari Dwinal (Laconia, NH/Laconia) recorded 16 saves and allowed six goals in 60 minutes in net for Cazenovia.
