Washington College Outgunned at Muhlenberg
ALLENTOWN, PA -- Host Muhlenberg College defeated visiting Washington College, 16-12, in the Centennial Conference regular-season women's lacrosse finale for both teams this afternoon in Allentown, PA. The Mules clinched the third seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Playoffs with the win, improving to 10-3 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The Shorewomen finish the season at 7-8 and 2-7 with the loss.
Muhlenberg opened the scoring two minutes into the game when Amanda McGovern scored on a free-position shot. Washington knotted the score at 1-1 when senior attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) scored off an assist from sophomore attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) with 19:58 left in the first half and pulled ahead, 2-1, 51 seconds later when Jakub scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sam Ohrem (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield).
The Mules evened the score with 15:38 remaining in the period on a goal by Ruth Morrongiello, but Washington went back on front on Jakub's third goal of the game with 14:55 left in the first half. Muhlenberg answered with a goal by Sara Hiller off an assist from Danielle Rosen with 9:44 to play in the half, tying the score at 3-3.
The Shorewomen went in front again when Cannon scored off an assist from senior midfielder Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) with 9:01 left in the half, but the Mules responded 36 seconds later as Danielle Scarrone scored off a feed from Alyssa Bascelli to tie the game at 4-4. Muhlenberg then took a 5-4 lead when McGovern fired in a goal with 6:50 to go before the intermission.
The Mules gained the first two-goal lead of the game on a Bascelli goal off an assist from Hiller with 6:26 left in the half. Washington cut the lead back to a goal when Lambert scored off an Ohrem assist with 3:07 remaining in the half. The Mules then scored a pair of quick back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 8-5 as Rosen scored off a Mary Ann Collins assist with 2:42 left and a McGovern goal with 2:33 to play before halftime. Muhlenberg took the 8-5 lead into the intermission.
McGovern extended the lead to 9-5 with a goal 56 seconds into the second half. Jakub then notched a free-position goal with 27:33 left to make it 9-6, but Christine Van Hise netted a free-position goal of her own with 26:59 to play to make it 10-6. Jakub trimmed the lead to 10-7 with 26:04 to go, but Rosen tacked on the Mules' 11th goal with 20:09 left and their 12th with 19:52 remaining.
Lambert put the Shorewomen back on the board with 18:42 on the clock to cut the lead to 12-8. Freshman attacker Kalli Parrish (Timonium, MD/McDonogh School) trimmed the margin to 12-9 with a goal with 15:57 remaining, but Hiller pushed the lead back to four goals with a tally with 10:44 on the clock and a goal by Van Hise off a McGovern assist 11 seconds later gave the Mules a 14-9 lead.
Jakub scored back-to-back goals to cut the margin to 14-11, the first off a Cannon assist with 9:08 remaining and the second off an Ohrem assist with 7:34 left. Bascelli answered for the Mules with a goal with 6:39 to go to make it 15-11. Lambert trimmed the advantage back to three goals with a score off an assist from Ohrem with 5:07 left, but Rosen fired in the Mules' 16th goal with 3:12 remaining.
McGovern and Rosen led the Mules with four goals and one assist each in the game. Jakub scored a career-high seven for the Shorewomen in her final collegiate game, while Lambert added three goals and one assist and Ohrem handed out four assists.
Muhlenberg held a 29-26 advantage in shots and a 19-11 margin in draw controls in the game.
