Stony Brook Falls to Albany on Senior Day

Stony Brook, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2009) – Senior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) solidified her position as one of the greatest scorers in school history, becoming the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team's all-time leader in goals but the Seawolves fell to Albany, 19-9, in America East Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Leggio finished with four goals, breaking the record of 148, set by Amy Taylor '07. Senior Kim Wodiska (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and sophomore Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist each for Stony Brook (4-11, 1-4 America East). Jodi Battaglia led Albany (8-7, 4-2) with five goals and three assists.

Trailing 1-0, the Seawolves got on the board with scores from Cook and senior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.), just 28 seconds apart. Cook scored her goal unassisted and Celano tallied her 18th of the season on an assist from Wodiska. The Great Danes would tie the score 17 seconds later, but Leggio, who is now the Seawolves' all-time leader in goals, points, ground balls and draw controls, scored her 34th and 35th goals of the season on free-position shots to help Stony Brook regain a 4-2 lead.

But Albany rattled off six straight goals over a 10-minute stretch, taking an 8-4 lead with 9:47 left in the first half. Sophomore Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) found the back of the net at the 8:26 mark, cutting the Albany lead to 8-5. Melanie Sosnowski free-position goal at 5:34 gave the Great Danes a 9-5 lead, as the score remained the same entering halftime.

Wodiska helped Stony Brook get within three, 9-6, on her 14th goal of the season, however Albany answered back, scoring the game's next five goals while taking a 14-6 lead with 20:39 left.

Hallion, who had a team-high four draw controls, scored on a free-position shot with 20:03 remaining to get Stony Brook within seven, 14-7. Then with under 17 minutes to go in the game, Cook took the ball from behind the cage and found Leggio, whose 147th career goal at 16:47 broke Taylor's mark, for the score. Leggio answered again, scoring unassisted at 14:55 to make it a 14-9 game. Albany scored the final five goals of the game.
