No. 8 Cortland Races Past Oneonta in SUNYAC Play

SUNY Oneonta freshman Blair Hanson (Fayetteville/Fayetteville Manlius) scored a pair of goals today, but it wasn't enough to overcome the potent offensive attack of rival Cortland today in SUNYAC men's lacrosse action.

The visiting Red Dragons fell behind 1-0 early before countering with six unanswered goals en route to an 18-8 win. Hanson scored the game's first goal at the 12:19 mark with an assist from junior Scott Weiner (Suffern/Suffern).

From that point on it was all Cortland (10-2/4-1), who scored nine goals in the second period to put the game out of reach for Oneonta (5-8/1-4).

Cortland was led today by senior Joey Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley), who scored five goals while assisting on one goal for six points on the day.

Oneonta will host city rival Hartwick this coming Tuesday evening under the lights beginning at 7:00 p.m.

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior Joey Morgan (Putnam Valley) scored a season-high five goals and added an assist to lead the nationally eighth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team to an 18-8 victory at Oneonta Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC play. The visiting Red Dragons improved to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the host Red Dragons fell to 5-8 and 1-4.

Freshman Greg Wright (Irondequoit) had three goals and an assist for Cortland. Sophomore Chris DeLuca (Sayville) added two goals and two assists and won 8 of 13 faceoffs. Junior Tom Burke (Massapequa) chipped in with two goals and an assist, freshman Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) scored twice, junior Brian Krol (Niskayuna) had a goal and two assists and junior Brandon Misiaszek (New Hartford) contributed a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Matt Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ) stopped five shots through the first three quarters before giving way to freshman Kyle Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage), who made four saves in the final quarter.

Blair Hanson scored a pair of goals for Oneonta. Scott Weiner and Andy Hilton had a goal and an assist, Ryan Waibel recorded two assists and John Carberry, Brian Kollar, Troy Lapore and Christopher Tenny each scored omce. Nick Murray played the first 55:52 and made six saves, followed by Sean Reynolds, who registered one save over the final 4:08.

Cortland led just 2-1 after the first quarter as Morgan netted both goals for the visiting Red Dragons, but broke the game open by outscoring the host Red Dragons, 9-2, in the second quarter for a commanding 11-3 lead. Morgan added three more goals in the second quarter, including the last two of the half. Cortland upped its lead to 14-5 after three quarters and outscored Oneonta, 4-3, in the last quarter for the 18-8 final score.

Cortland outshot Oneonta, 42-25, and held a 46-33 advantage in ground balls.
