Host Red Dragons Hold off Late Surge by Golden Eagles

SUNY Oneonta senior Brianne Ruzek (Mineola/St. Mary Manhasset) scored seven goals to lead the Red Dragons to a 16-13 win today at home against the College at Brockport in SUNYAC women's lacrosse action. Sophomore Rosemarie Fazio (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland) added five goals and two assists to aid the effort of Ruzek as Oneonta (8-4/5-1) held off a late charge by the Golden Eagles in the second half of play.

Brockport (3-8/3-3) trailed 12-4 with about 25 minutes remaining in the second half before putting together a run that cut Oneonta's lead to one goal at 14-13 with just under five minutes to go in regulation.

The charge was led by freshman Carly Motondo (Syracuse/West Genesee), who scored three goals and aided on two others.

Fazio and junior Lauren Portnoy (Sea Cliff/North Shore) closed the door with back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of the contest for the final margin of victory.

Oneonta built itself a 9-4 lead at halftime thanks to Ruzek, who tallied five times including three straight early on when the Red Dragons jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

Freshman goalie Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague) made 11 saves today for Oneonta including nine in the second half.

Oneonta will be in action again this coming Tuesday at home against rival Cortland in a SUNYAC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
