Rally Falls Short, as Bears Hold off Visiting Devils
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team saved the best for last. Playing in front a large crowd on Senior Day, the Bears (5-8, 2-5 Centennial) raced out to a 9-2 lead after three quarters and fended off a late Dickinson (6-7, 2-5 Centennial) charge in a 10-8 win over the Red Devils Saturday afternoon.
While it was Senior Day, freshmen made headlines as midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, FL/Mantanzas) netted six goals, while midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) scored three in the win. Junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) had a goal, while senior Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) had two assists. Junior midfielder Tom Walsh (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) had an assist as well.
The Bears defensive unit really turned up the heat on the warm, spring day. The Bears forced 16 Red Devil turnovers. Another senior, goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) had 24 saves on the day for the Bears. Ursinus also excelled at midfield, winning 13 of 21 faceoffs, with sophomore midfielder Graig Gallo (Winter Springs, FL/Winter Springs) winning seven faceoffs.
The Bears scored the opening three goals of the game as Ocampo scored the game's lone goal in the first quarter at 11:24 for a 1-0 lead. He then scored the Bears' lone extra-man goal at 14:04 unassisted for a 2-0 lead. Farris netted his lone goal on an Orlando assist at 13:04 for a 3-0 lead.
Dickinson's Ted Sirvaitis scored the Red Devils only goal of the first half at 8:43 left to cut the deficit to 3-1. From there, Ursinus scored the next four goals for a 7-1 lead with 10:33 left in the third quarter.
Dickinson mounted its final charge in the fourth quarter. Trailing 9-2, the Red Devils scored three straight goals to get within four at 9-5. Ocampo scored his final goal of the game at 10:59 for a 10-5 edge. The Red Devils got three goals, including one with 18 ticks left, but, could not get any closer than the final 10-8 margin.
Junior defender Matt Conway (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Germantown Academy) scooped up seven groundballs for Ursinus, who goes to St. Mary's on Wednesday.

Collegeville, Pa. - The Dickinson College men's lacrosse team suffered a 10-8 setback at Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils rallied with six goals in the fourth quarter but could not catch the Bears as they slip to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in the Centennial Conference.
Jeff Ocampo put Ursinus on the board with the only goal of the first quarter. He struck again early in the second to trigger a 4-1 run that put the Bears in front 6-1 at halftime. The Bears tacked on three in the third quarter, scoring twice in the final 1:19 to stretch the margin to 9-2 heading into the final period.
The Red Devils tried to rally, netting three straight goals to start the fourth quarter. Ocampo answered to stall the run before the Devils tacked on three more before time expired.
Ted Sirvaitis (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) scored the first two Devil goals. He finished with two goals and two assists on the day. Chris Dodson (Bethesda, Md./Landon) scored twice and dished out two assists as well. First-year Sam Greenburg (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) led the attack with three goals
Russell Matthews (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) made 17 saves and controlled four ground balls in goal for the Devils. Defenseman Chris Breslin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) controlled three ground balls and caused three turnovers on the day.
Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) won seven face-offs and controlled four ground balls. Ocampo led all scorers with six goals. Tony Aquilino made 24 saves in goal for Ursinus (5-8, 2-4).
The Red Devils return home to face McDaniel College next Friday. The game will be the first night lacrosse game at Biddle Field. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm.
