DAVIDSON, N.C. - Closing out the home portion of their 2009 schedule, the Davidson women's lacrosse team suffered a 17-5 setback to No. 5 Duke on Senior Day at Richardson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Playing its second straight top-25 opponent, Davidson fell to 5-10 on the season with just one more game to go. No. 5 Duke rebounded from a loss at UNC on Friday evening to improve to 11-4.

Duke had 10 players who filled the score sheet with at least one goal, and four of them tallied two or more goals. Christie Kaestner led the attack with four goals, getting three of them in the first seven-and-half minutes when Duke raced out to 7-0 lead.

For Davidson, junior Haley Cook had her third three-goal game of the season, while fellow junior Jen Crawford and senior Callie Seymour each registered a goal apiece.

Freshman Anna Smith recorded her third assist of the season, hooking up with Seymour at the 15:14 mark of the second half.

The contest started out with Lindsay Gilbride scoring back-to-back goals at the 29:34 and 28:56 marks of the first period, and Duke never looked back. Emma Hamm assisted on the second goal, one of two assists on the afternoon for her. Five Blue Devils in all tallied assists in the game.

The Wildcats broke through with a free-position goal by Cook at the 13:01 mark of the first half to make it 8-1. The free-position goal was one of four in the contest for the 'Cats, who finished 4 of 7 on their attempts.

Despite trailing 16-1, Davidson never backed down and proceeded to go on a four-goal run just past the midway point of the second period. Seymour started the rally with a shot to the corner of the goal off a nice pass from Smith.

Shortly thereafter, Crawford connected at the 13:45 mark on one of three straight free-position goals for Davidson, with Cook netting the other two goals, to make the score 16-5. Duke then closed out the scoring with a free-position goal of its own at the 4:29 mark.

Prior to the start of the contest, the 'Cats honored their five seniors for their four-years of dedication to the lacrosse program. Four of the five seniors etched their names in the stat sheet in the final home contest of their Wildcat careers.

Leading the way was Seymour, who scored her 36th career goal. Defenders Jennifer Lindsey and Claire O'Shea each tallied one of Davidson's 12 groundballs, while Heather Frohman had one of the Wildcats' seven draw controls.

Becky Horton, who was lost earlier in the year to a season-ending injury, is still third on the team with her 16 goals and 19 points. She finished her career just outside the Wildcat record books in goals (88) and points (121).

Davidson closes out the season with a 4:00 p.m. contest at Presbyterian on Tuesday, Apr. 21.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Duke women's lacrosse team came out firing on Sunday afternoon, defeating Davidson 17-5 at Stephen B. Smith Field to move to 11-4 on the season. Christie Kaestner led all scorers with four goals, a career-high for the sophomore.

Kaestner and junior Lindsay Gilbride got the Blue Devils off to a rolling start, each notching hat tricks in the first eight minutes of play as Duke established control early. With the visitors out to a 6-0 lead, Davidson called a timeout but Duke put two more on the board to go up 8-0 at the 17:27 mark, on the first of two on the afternoon for sophomore Morgan Miller.

The Wildcats were held off the scoreboard until 13:01 remained in the first half, a free-position score for Haley Cook. The Blue Devils then scored the final six goals of the first half to make it 14-1 at the break – good for their second-highest first-half output of the season.
