Goucher Outguns Frostburg State
TOWSON, Md. – Goucher put up 18 goals for the third straight game today, this time in an 18-12 non-conference victory over Frostburg State.
Even though they outshot the Bobcats, 19-12, in the first half, the Gophers (7-6) walked off the field at the break ahead only 8-7. But they stuck three goals in the opening 4:06 of the second half to assume an 11-7 advantage and, after Frostburg temporarily stopped the bleeding with a goal off a free-position shot by Elisabeth Hildebrand, they responded with a run of four consecutive goals to extend their lead to 15-8.
The two teams were never separated by more than a goal until Marlo Tersigni (Boston, Mass./Lawrence Academy) stuck a free-position shot with 1:16 remaining before haltime to put Goucher ahead 7-5. Tersigni scored again with :33 left to play, once again providing the Gophers with a two-goal edge, but the Bobcats (6-8) reduced their deficit to a single goal when Joanna McIntire converted a free-position shot with only :13 showing on the clock.
Six different players scored goals for Goucher: Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) contributed four goals to the win, Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hebron School), Tersigni, Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) and Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) all tallied three goals and Jenny Lucey (Newbury, N.H./Kimball Union Academy) supplied the Gophers with a pair of goals. In addition to her three goals, Cole was awarded four assists.
The last time the Gophers scored 18 or more goals in back-to-back-to-back games was in 2005. That streak started with a 23-13 win over Frostburg State, after which they pounded Stevenson, 23-3, and Marymount, 19-0.
