Bates Storms Past Southern Maine
LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's lacrosse team coasted to an 18-5 non-conference victory over in-state rival University of Southern Maine on Sunday. The Bobcats led 13-1 at halftime and extended the lead as high as 15-1 with 25:12 left in the game. Bates outshot Southern Maine by a 31-10 margin. Bates raised its record to 8-5 overall, while the visiting Huskies dropped to 4-8 on the season.
Bates senior Caroline Thomas assisted on Bates' first three goals and finished with two goals and four assists in the game. Jenna Dannis scored three goals with one assist, while Morgan Maciewicz added two goals and two assists. Maggie Reilly had two goals and one assist, while Briana Gross, Joan O'Neill and Molly Dilworth all had two goals apiece. Ellie McDonald scored once and assisted on two other tallies.
Mary Vaughan scored two goals for the Huskies, while Jessica Knight added a goal and an assist. Rachel Lolley made nine saves in net. Mara Krueger started in goal for Bates and made two saves in the first half before giving way to Leah Elsmore for the second half. Elsmore made one save.
Bates hosts Colby on Friday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. in its home finale. Southern Maine will host Rhode Island College at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Bobcats won for the third time in their last four games to improve to 8-5. The Huskies dropped their fifth straight game to fall to 4-8.
Sophomore Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret) led Southern Maine's offense with two goals. Junior Jessica Knight (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Rachel Lolley (Gorham, Maine) recorded nine saves.
Junior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) complemented Thomas with two goals and two assists and freshman Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) registered three goals. Rookies Maggie Reilly (Wellesley, Mass.) and Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.), junior Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine), and sophomore Briana Gross (Andover, Mass.) scored two goals apiece. Sophomore Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Leah Elsmore (Shaker Heights, Ohio) split the goalie chores for Bates and combined to make three saves.
The Bobcats raced out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 5:20 before the Huskies got on the board as Vaughan scored with 21:24 to go in the half. The Bobcats would score eight unanswered goals before the first half ended to build a comfortable 13-1 lead at the break. Thomas had all six of her points in the first half.
Southern Maine hosts Rhode Island College on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) for a critical Little East Conference game. Bates is at in-state rival Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
