Grand Canyon Tops Dominican to Win Baggataway Cup
Grand Canyon University beat Dominican University, 17-9, Sunday to win the three-team Baggataway Cup at GCU Lacrosse Stadium. It was GCU's first championship in the program's two-year history.
Jordy Patterson (Chandler/Corona del Sol HS) scored six goals and Jacob Hippensteel (Chandler HS) had five goals. Scott Franks (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) had four assists and a goal for the Antelopes, who finished the season with back-to-back wins for the first time ever. Goalkeeper Andrew Hunter made nine saves and allowed just three goals in three periods of work to record his third win of the season.
Grand Canyon (3-12) won 58 ground balls, while Dominican (6-9) scooped up 29. The Antelopes won 19 of the 26 faceoffs. Danny Tussy (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) won 11 of his 14 draws and had 11 ground balls, and Bryce Sheldon (University Place, Wash./Curtis HS) won seven of his 10 in the circle, while picking up 10 ground balls.
"It feels good to go out on a good note," said Hippensteel, who finished with a team-high 33 points this year. "We definitely learned a lot from playing those more experienced teams earlier this year. Coming home to have a few more games, we got to put it all to play."
