Tars Stay Undefeated in Region with Win over Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (April 19, 2009) - Sophomore duo Liz Connelly and Katy Tyszko teamed-up in the final 35 seconds of regulation to net the go ahead goal for Rollins as they defeated South Region opponent Bloomsburg University 9-8 on Sunday afternoon in Bloomsburg, Pa. The victory over the Huskies secures the Tars' seventh-straight win, and puts them at an overall mark of 11-2, while BU drops to 11-5 on the season.

Senior goalie Lisa Weber walked away with 10 big saves on the day, including seven in the second half, to help the Rollins women's lacrosse team stay undefeated against South Region opponents. Connelly and Tyszko helped Weber notch the win as they netted four goals and three assists, respectively.

Joining the veteran duo on the scoreboard were Marissa Giannerini with two goals, as well as the midfield trio of Bizzie Durell, Tori Snow, and Lacy Goodwyn with one goal each. Assisting along with Tyzko's three were Durell and Mallory Surpless as they registered one each in second half play.

The Huskies were headed-up by Kelsey Quigley, Tia Mazzie, and Kylie Matthews who contributed two goals apiece on the day. Kim Springman led the team in overall points with three as she netted one goal and two assists, while Samantha King scored one goal as well.

The game opened up slow as both teams were unable to capitalize on offensive opportunities for a little over 10 minutes of play, but a free-position shot from Giannerini at the 18:59 mark ignited a back and forth contest that would last a full 60 minutes.

Connelly and Tyszko teamed up three minutes later to rip a shot between the pipes to put Rollins up 2-0 before Bloomsburg found an opening for King to put the Huskies on the board with 13:10 on the clock.

Rollins won the ensuing draw control to regain possession and net their third goal of the day as Connelly once again found her way around Bloomsburg goalie Allison Ziants from the top to pull ahead by two.

Quigley grabbed an assist from Cara McGroarty at the 8:33 mark to pull the Huskies back to within one of the Tars, and with a quick goal from Springman off of an assist from Allie Kakareka to grab the equalizer and lock-up the score at three with 1:30 to go before the break. The Tars once again gained control off of the resulting draw, allowing them to set up a play, but a quick turnover allowed Bloomsburg to clear the ball down field and fire a shot that was saved by Weber at the horn.

Rollins exploded into the second half with a goal from Durell just 11 seconds into the period, and with solid defensive work from a strong back line holding the Huskies back, a fast break clear gave Giannerini the go ahead for Rollins' fifth goal of the afternoon.

Three minutes later, Connelly and Tyszko combined efforts once more to pull the Tars back out to a three goal lead with a score of 6-3, but Bloomsburg was not about to back down as they capitalized on an offensive opportunity a minute later with a goal from Mazzie.

Rollins notched the next point thanks to Snow, but Quigley ignited a three goal run that closed the gap and allowed Mazzie to score the equalizer off of a free-position shot to even the score at seven with 12:38 to go.

The Tars retaliated with some quick thinking and fancy stick work to score just 20 seconds later as Goodwyn grabbed a quick flip from Durell to sneak a shot by Ziants, but Bloomsburg fought on and made the most of a defensive Rollins turnover to tie-up the game at 8-8 with 10:47 on the clock.

Weber was stellar in the final ten minutes as she collected a key ground ball, and made one crucial save while seeing four shots to hold the Huskies silent and allow Rollins to gain possession off of a wild shot. With 35 seconds to go, Connelly and Tyszko teamed-up for one last time to put the Tars ahead 9-8 and lock-in the win as Snow won the final draw control of the afternoon to retain possession.

The Rollins women's lacrosse team returns to the field on Friday, April 24, when they travel to South Region opponent Limestone College for a 4:00 p.m. showdown before closing out their regular season schedule at Converse College in a Sunday matchup at noon on April 26.
