BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sarah DeStefano (Eliot, Maine) and Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario) scored three goals each as Vermont cruised past Long Island University, 16-7, in women's lacrosse action at Moulton Winder Field on Tuesday afternoon.

It was a day full of milestones for Millar. Her first goal of the game at the 22:01 mark of the first half set a new UVM career record for goals scored. She entered the game tied with former standout Vanessa Cox for the all-time mark of 133 goals, which Cox set in 2005. Millar increased her career goal total to 136 with her hat trick.

Millar also became the all-time NCAA leader in draw controls with seven on the afternoon. Millar entered the game four draw controls shy of breaking the NCAA mark of 334 career draws set by former Maryland All-American Dana Dobbie '08 last year. With her seven draw controls, Millar's career total is now 338.

The Catamounts dominated the game from the start, rolling out to an 8-0 lead to begin the game. The Blackbirds finally got on the board on a goal by Kristina Scheerer at the 9:30 mark and scored three of the next four to cut the lead to 9-3 with 7:04 remaining in the half. UVM closed out the game scoring the final four goals, including the first career tally for freshman Lauren Giraldi (Woodbine, Md.) with five seconds left in the half, to hold a 10-goal lead at the break, 13-3.

Long Island out-scored Vermont, 4-3, in the second half, but it wasn't enough to climb back from the deficit. A total of 12 players scored for the Catamounts. Devin Markle (Bethany, Conn.) picked up her first goal of the year and freshman Adison Rounds (Centennial, Colo.) netted her first career goal for Vermont.

Olivia Hatfield (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Laura Barber (Middlebury, Vt.) each played a half and combined for 10 stops.

Claire Ranney led LIU with a pair of goals and Christine Wienckowski added a pair of assists. Amber Meet and Jaqueline Simonian combined for 12 saves for the Blackbirds.

Vermont improves to 8-7 overall, matching its win total from last year, which is the second most wins in school history. LIU falls to 4-13 on the season. The Catamounts close out the regular season hosting Stony Brook at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (April 25) at Moulton Winder Field. A win over the Seawolves would propel Vermont into the America East Women's Lacrosse Championship for the second straight season.

Prior to the start of the game, UVM will honor its senior class of DeStefano, Jessa Merrill (Kennebunk, Maine), Millar and Annie Strout (North Andover, Mass.).

Burlington, Vt. – The Long Island University women's lacrosse team could not overcome a fast start by Vermont in the 2009 season finale and fell, 16-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field. The Blackbirds had six different scorers in the contest, led by freshman Claire Ranney (Jarrettsville, Md.) with two goals.

Vermont (8-7) raced out to an 8-0 lead in the opening 18:02 and never looked back. Junior Kristina Scheerer (West Chester, Pa.) ended the run and got LIU on the board off a pass from junior Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.) at the 9:30 mark. Following a Catamounts goal, junior Jenna Schauder (Jackson, N.J.) off a feed from senior Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.) and Ranney connected on consecutive goals to get LIU within 9-3, but Vermont finished on a 4-0 run to take a double-figure lead into the intermission.

The Catamounts slowed down the action and scored a pair of goals to start the second half. The Blackbirds' offense closed the contest strong, with sophomore Annie Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Ranney converting free position shots to fuel a 4-1 run in the final 11:55 for LIU. Following a Caitlyn Clark goal for Vermont, freshman Ashley Prizio (Brookfield, Conn.) scored off a pass from Schauder and Funk converted a feed from Wienckowski to close out the scoring.
