Scranton Downs Crosstown Rival Marywood
SCRANTON, Pa.-The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team scored seven straight goals during a seven-minute span to break away from a one-goal lead en route to a 14-8 victory over cross-town neighbor Marywood University Tuesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.
The Pacers trailed 5-3 at intermission and 6-3 early in the second half before sophomore attacker Ryne Boyle (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) and sophomore midfielder Stephen Klepfer (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) tallied goals to cut Scranton's lead to one, 6-5, with 6:25 left in the third period.
Behind two goals from sophomore midfielder Christian Dugan (Avon, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and one each by senior attacker Nick Youngstrom (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), freshman attacker Brett Greer (Morton, Pa./Ridley), sophomore midfielder JP Barton (North Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen), sophomore attacker Robert Pantages (Roseland, N.J./West Essex), and freshman attacker Robby Napp (Spring Lake, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), the Royals went on a 7-0 spurt to take control of the game and extend their lead to 13-5 with eight minutes remaining in the fourth period.
The win was the fourth straight for Scranton, now 8-5, while the Pacers had a season-long seven-game winning streak snapped and fell to 9-5.
Greer, Youngstrom and Napp paced a balance Royal attack with two goals apiece and senior midfielder Thomas Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y./W.C. Mepham), sophomore attacker Kyle Frank (Glen Arm, Md./Boys' Latin), sophomore midfielder Keenan Dowd (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic), and sophomore attacker Ted Abbot (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) contributed a goal apiece. Scranton, which held a 44-22 advantage in shots and a 49-38 margin in ground balls, also received three assists from freshman midfielder Mike Rufo (Broomall, Pa./Haverford School) and two from Greer.
Freshman attacker Dustin Sturdevant (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) led Marywood with two goals apiece and sophomore midfielder Jamie Beagen (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and sophomore Nick Parks (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) finished with two assists apiece.
The game was tied twice before Scranton went on top for good behind a goal by Frank on a play set up by Greer with 53 seconds remaining in the first period and Youngstrom followed with a goal off an assist by Rufo midway through the second to give the Royals a 4-2 lead. After Boyle made it 4-3 off of a pass from Bergen, Scranton got some breathing room when Dowd went the length of the field and scored an unassisted goal with 10 seconds left before intermission.
Royal sophomore goalie Jeremy Dowiak (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris) made eight saves in nearly 57 minutes of action, while Pacer sophomore Jess Habich (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) was credited with a game-high 10 in the same amount of playing time.
The Royals will end the regular season this Saturday, April 25, against Drew University beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Madison, New Jersey.
