Randolph-Macon Holds off Guilford in ODAC Quarterfinals
ASHLAND, VA -- Third-seeded Randolph-Macon used three goals from Erin Clare Cassidy as the Yellow Jackets upended sixth-seeded Guilford 11-8 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The win propels R-MC into a semifinal match with second-seeded Washington and Lee on Saturday, while Guilford sees its season end with a 6-11 record.
R-MC (9-6) jumped out to a 3-0 advantage getting goals from Cassidy, Laura Fox and Amanda Rzucidlo. GC got on the board with 12:57 to play in the first-half on a strike from Carrie Ernst. The Yellow Jackets reeled off four tallies in a row, the last of which coming at the 3:51 mark when Morgan Hutchinson found the back of the net to put R-MC up 7-1.
Back-to-back goals by Ernst and Hannah Merrell with less than a minute to play in the first stanza sent the teams to intermission with Randolph-Macon up 7-3.
GC scored three of the first four goals of the second half, cutting the R-MC lead to 8-6 on a goal by Merrell with 22:42 to play in the game. R-MC responded with three goals over the course of the next 5:36, getting tallies from Elyse Cooper, Emily Kent and Cassidy, who made the score 11-6 with 17:16 to play.
Ernst and Shelly Nogueira pulled the Quakers within three at 11-8 with just under 14 minutes to play, but R-MC was able to run the clock out and secure the victory.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Quakers 33-17 and held a 23-21 edge in the ground balls. Fox, Kent and Hutchinson each tallied two points on the day, while Alex Flammia made five saves in net for R-MC. GC was led by Ernst's four goals and Alyzza-May Callahan turned aside 14 shots on the day in the cage.
