Larson Leads Devils Past McDaniel to CC Semifinals
(Carlisle, Pa.) - Junior midfielder Abby Larson (Easton, Md./Gunston Day) scored a game and career-high seven goals, leading the Dickinson College women's lacrosse team to a 19-11 win over McDaniel in the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs on Wednesday.
The Red Devils jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before the Green Terror answered with three straight to take the lead with 21:15 on the clock. The teams continued to trade goals as the lead never grew to more than two goals for the better part of the first half. Dickinson gained its biggest advantage at the end of the half as Larson tallied a natural hat-trick to put the Devils in front 11-7 at the break.
The Devils tacked on a pair of goals to start the second half, stretching the margin to 13-7. McDaniel answered at the 21:58 mark, but the Devils responded with a 4-0 run to take control of the game, 17-8, with 11:35 remaining.
The Green Terror rallied, scoring three straight goals to make the score 17-11 with 5:50 remaining in the game. The Devils tacked on two goals down the stretch for the final of 19-11.
Larson matched the third-highest mark for goals scored in a game in program history with her seven on the day. She also controlled six draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers.
Lexie Kob (Collegeville, Pa./Springford) and Lucy West (Bethesda, Md./Holton-Arms) each scored three goals and had an assist. Kelsey Muir (Glen Mills, Pa./Notre Dame) tallied three goals as well while Amy Jennings (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored once and dished out three assists to go with five ground balls. Sunnie Ko (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) chipped in with a goal and two assists while controlling four draws on the day.
Ana Sokol (Colts Neck, N.J./The Peddie School) anchored a solid defensive effort with four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Renee Welker (Butler, Pa./Shady Side) turned in a strong performance as well, controlling three draws and causing a pair of turnovers.
Sophomore Jessie Clark (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) made 11 saves in goal for Dickinson.
Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led McDaniel with four goals and an assist, causing three turnovers on the day. Jennifer Stone (Baltimore, Md/Loch Raven) tallied three goals while Lindsay McDonald added a goal and two assists. Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) scored twice as well. Stephanie Serbun (Abington, Pa./Abington) controlled a team-high four draws while Michelle Fluty (Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) added four ground balls.
Leanne Hollinger (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made nine saves in 43 minutes of action in the McDaniel cage. Meg Tart (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) came on to stop six shots in 17 minutes.
The Red Devils improve to 11-7 overall. They advance to the conference semifinals for the fourth straight season. They will face top-seed Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster at 1:00 pm on Saturday. McDaniel slips to 9-8 on the season.
