Ursinus Spoils St. Mary's (Md.) Senior Day

St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomores Pat Gillen (Merrick, N.Y.) and Matt Angle (Manchester, Md.) each scored in a 2:05-minute span to give the Ursinus College men's lacrosse team an 11-10 non-conference victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland, spoiling Senior Day on a stormy Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) finished off a pass from junior captain Ryan Alexander (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) with 21 ticks on the clock to bring the Seahawks (7-7) within one. However, sophomore Reilly Hannapel (Stillwell, Kans.) won the ensuing face-off and Ursinus effectively killed the clock for its third consecutive win.

Senior attackman Jason Orlando (Morton, Pa.) coordinated the Bear offense, leading his team with two goals and an assist, while freshmen midfielders Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla.) and David Kraus (Madison, Conn.) each tallied two goals apiece.

The Seahawks (7-7) jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first period as Alexander found the back of the net twice – once to start the quarter and one to end it.

Ursinus (6-8) came out roaring in the second stanza, outscoring the home team 5 to 2. The Bears notched the quarter's first two goals before sophomore attackman Chris Morihlatko (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) slowed down their momentum with his ninth tally of the season at 7:34 to return the advantage back to St. Mary's. After the teams traded the next two goals, UC scored the half's final two goals for a 7-6 Bear halftime lead.

Orlando started the third quarter scoring with an unassisted goal at 13:11 to double the visitor's lead before Rosson and Alexander notched back-to-back goals to knot the game at 8-all at 9:52. The Bears headed into the final period ahead 9-8 as junior attackman Dan Monzo (Collegeville, Pa.) tallied a man-up goal with 24 seconds left.

Sophomore attackman Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) tied the game for the fifth and final time at 9-9 as Becraft took a feed from Rosson and found the back of the net with 9:59 left in the game.

Rosson led the Seahawks with three goals and three assists, while Alexander finished with three goals and an assist and Becraft contributed a goal and two assists.

St. Mary's fired off 45 shots to the Bears' 23, while the Seahawks won the ground ball battle, 35-22, as senior Marc DiPasquale (Fallston, Md./Boys' Latin) scooped up a game-high five ground balls. DiPasquale also won 14 of 24 face-offs.

Senior Tony Aquilino (Abington, Pa.) made 11 saves in the win, while SMCM sophomores Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and JJ Strombosky (Westford, Mass./Rivers) combined for three saves.

St. Mary's returns to action this Saturday as the Seahawks will wrap up the 2009 campaign in Newport News, Virginia against Christopher Newport University at 1:00.

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Three different players scored two goals each as Ursinus (6-8) scored an 11-10 win over St. Mary's (Md.) (7-7) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action.

Senior attack Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield), freshman midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, FL/Mantanzas) and freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) had two goals each as Ursinus connected on 11 of its 23 shots for goals. Junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) had a goal and an assist in the win, Ursinus' third straight victory.

Ursinus pulled away from the Seahawks in the fourth quarter as with the team's tied up at 9-all, sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored a goal with 6:12 unassisted for a 10-9 lead. Sophomore midfielder Matt Angle (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) then scored a goal with 4:07 left in the fourth, on a junior midfielder Jake West (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) assist, for an 11-9 lead.

Sophomore midfielder Tony Ubertaccio (Green Village, NY/Delbarton) and junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) also had goals in the win, while Orlando added in an assist.

Defensively, the Bears forced 14 turnovers while Angle picked up four groundballs. Senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) had another great performance, making 11 saves.

Ursinus heads to Muhlenberg on Saturday for its regular season finale.
