#18 Lynchburg Upsets #7 Washington & Lee in ODACs
LEXINGTON, Va. - The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 10:49 of the game, but was outscored 10-3 the rest of the way in falling to 18th-ranked Lynchburg College on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.
Junior midfielder Chris Washington (Flint, Mich./Cranbrook Kingwood) and sophomore attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) scored two goals each in powering the Generals (12-3, 4-2) to the early 4-0 advantage.
The Hornets (11-4, 5-1) got on the board with an unassisted goal by first-year attackman Dylan Hoff (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) with 28 seconds left in the first period, but W&L pushed back to a four-goal lead (5-1) on an unassisted tally by sophomore midfielder Drew Koeneman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) at 12:04 of the second period.
Lynchburg responded with three-straight goals, including a pair by senior attackman Michael Mundorf (Cambridge, Md./Mt. St. Joseph), to cut it to a 5-4 game with 4:35 left in the half. Senior attackman Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford) scored off a Daw feed for a 6-4 lead at 2:42, but the Hornets closed with two goals to knot the score at 6-6 heading into haltime.
Hoff scored a pair of goals to start the third quarter scoring, before sophomore midfielder Mark Wachtmeister (Wellesley, Mass./Belmont Hill) scored unassisted with 3:10 left in the third quarter to make the score 8-7 in favor of LC. However, the Hornets scored two more and held the Generals scoreless in the fourth period for the three-goal win, their fifth-straight over W&L.
Daw led W&L with two goals and one assist, while Washington had two goals. Senior Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) played all 60 minutes in goal and made eight saves.
Hoff paced the Hornets with four goals and one assist, while Mundorf had three goals. Junior midfielder Ethan Farrell (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket) chipped in one goal and two assists and first-year goalkeeper Franc Cook (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) totaled 12 saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Guilford in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament.

LEXINGTON, VA – Freshman Dylan Hoff (Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East) scored four goals Wednesday as the 18th-ranked Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team fought back from an early four-goal deficit to upset #7 Washington & Lee University 10-7 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
The Generals got two goals each from Spence Daw and Chris Washington to take a 4-0 lead, but Hoff scored with 28 seconds left in the first period to get LC on the board. After an early W&L second-quarter goal, the Hornets netted five of the next six scores to tie the game at six heading into intermission.
Hoff scored twice after the break, and W&L's Mark Wachtmeister answered with 3:10 left in the third, which proved to be the Generals' last score. Tyler Tolson (Lutherville, VA/Loyola Blakefield) scored with 10 seconds left in the third and Kyle Fortman (Gambrills, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) added an insurance tally in the final quarter.
Michael Mundorf (Cambridge, MD/Mount Saint Joseph) scored three times for Lynchburg, and Ethan Farrell (Nantucket, MA/Nantucket) posted a goal and two assists. Tolson and Fortman each had a goal and an assist, and freshman keeper Franc Cook (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) made 12 stops – six in the second half. The Generals won 16 of the games 20 face-offs, with Kevin Feeney winning all seven of his attempts. Daw finished with two goals and an assist for Washington & Lee (12-3/4-2 ODAC).
The Hornets now enter the upcoming six-team ODAC Tournament as the #2 seed, knocking W&L to #3. LC will receive a first-round bye this weekend and rest up for a home semi-final match-up on Shellenberger Field Wednesday against the W&L/Guilford first-round winner. Roanoke earned the #1 seed in the tournament.
