11-Goal Run the Catalyst as No. 10 Stonehill Tops Bentley
EASTON, Mass. – No. 10 Stonehill used an 11-goal first half run to turn a tie game into a comfortable lead, and the Skyhawks defeated Bentley University 23-8 on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 women's lacrosse. Seniors Mary Maloney and Michelle Kelly led the way with seven and six goals, respectively.
After Stonehill grabbed an early 2-0 lead, Bentley fought back with two straight of its own courtesy of senior Kim Morris (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and junior Erica de Silva (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth).
Kelly gave the Skyhawks a 3-2 lead at the 24:52 mark, but senior Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) got that goal back just 42 seconds later with her first tally of the game. Freshman Carly Keeley found the back of the net three minutes later to make it 4-3 for the home side, but sophomore Leigh Tedeschi (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) answered back on an assist from junior Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington).
After Tedeschi's goal however, it was all Stonehill. The Skyhawks scored 11 straight goals over the remainder of the half to give themselves a 15-4 halftime lead. Maloney scored four goals during the run and junior Jackie Ladino added two.
Bentley scored the first two goals of the second half, with freshman Lauren Canepa (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and Ritchie scoring to break the run. Ritchie scored her third of the game at the 8:07 mark and Griffin found the back of the net in the game's latter stages as well.
The Falcons, now 8-8 on the year and 6-3 in the NE-10, will close out the regular season against Saint Anselm on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
