No. 2 C.W. Post Edges No. 10 Stonehill in Shootout
NORTH EASON, Mass. (April 25, 2009) - Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) made twelve saves in the second half to propel C.W. Post past Stonehille College, 18-16, Saturday afternoon. Seniors Jaclyn Napoli (West Islip, N.Y.) and Katie Hogan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each added four goals to ensure the Pioneers fourteenth straight win.The Pioneers improve to 14-1 overall, 4-0 in conference play while the Skyhawks drop to 10-4 overall, 9-1 in the NE-10.
The Stonehill Skyhawks struck first, as Michelle Kelly scored the first goal of the game less than a minute into play. The Skyhawks notched three more goals to put themselves ahead 4-0 at the 23:59 mark. Napoli scored her first of four goals to put the Pioneers on the board with 20:42 left in the first half of play.
After another goal from the Skyhawks, Napoli tallied two more marks to bring C.W. Post within two, and start a 10-0 run for the Pioneers. Freshman Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) connected with teammate Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) to cut the Skyhawks? lead down to one goal.
Katie Hogan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored off a feed from Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) to tie the game with 12:25 left in the first half. The Pioneers notched six more unanswered goals, capitalizing on free position attempts by Olen and Hogan to give the Pioneers an 11-5 lead at the half.
C.W. Post continued its streak just twelve seconds into the second half as Olen scored her third goal of the day to give the Pioneers a six goal cushion. Stonehill rallied back, as teammates Liza Gross and Michelle Salmon each scored to make the score 13-8. Passafiume and Jackolski each notched an unassisted goal to increase C.W. Post?s lead to seven.
Kelly added two more goals for Stonehill before Hogan and Samantha Lyons (Farmingdale, N.Y.) notched a goal apiece in the last three minutes of play to ensure the win for C.W. Post.
Powers made a total of thirteen goals in net for the Pioneers to seal the win. Justine Ferland made nine saves for the Skyhawks in sixty minutes of play. C.W. Post held a 24-22 edge in ground balls over Stonehill. The Pioneers complete 12-14 clear attempts and capitalized on 3 of 5 free position attempts.
C.W. Post looks to continue its winning ways as they travel to St. Anselm College Sunday, April 26th for a 12:00 p.m. game.
