No. 8 Johns Hopkins Pulls Away from Mount St. Mary's

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 27, 2009)--No. 8 Johns Hopkins scored seven of the games final eight goals to pull away from Mount St. Mary's for a 12-5 victory at Waldron Family Stadium on Monday night before a record crowd of 1,258 fans. Mount St. Mary's senior Geery Grant (Blue Point, N.Y./Chaminade) scored a pair of goals in the first-ever night game at the stadium. The attendance was both a Mount St. Mary's record and a Waldron Family Stadium record.

Johns Hopkins (8-4) started the game quickly, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 5:50. Chris Boland converted a Brian Christopher pass to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead just 1:23 into the game. Josh Peck's goal with 9:10 left in the opening quarter extended the lead to 2-0.

The Mount (5-9) fought back to even the score at 2-2 after one quarter of play. Freshman Christian Kellett (Audubon, Pa./Malvern Prep) scored on a feed from fellow freshman Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) to cut the lead in half midway through the first. Freshman Mike Adkins (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) then converted a feed from Brendan Harrison (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) off a fast break to even the score with 1:37 left in the opening quarter.

Mount St. Mary's grabbed its first lead of the game when Grant scored in front of the cage on a nice feed from Eric Ososki (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) with 9:13 left in the half.

The Blue Jays, however, scored two goals in a span of 19 seconds late in the half to grab a 4-3 advantage. Kyle Wharton scored the first goal on a pass from Boland while Boland tallied his second goal of the game on a feed from Peck.

Johns Hopkins opened the scoring in the second half on a Christopher tally 1:59 into the third quarter, bu the Mount's Anthony Golden (Timonium, Md./Loyola Blakefield) cut the deficit to 5-4 with 9:44 left in the third. Wharton posted an extra-man goal just 30 seconds later to restore a two-goal advantage for the Blue Jays while Christopher posted his second goal of the quarter to make it 7-4.

Grant posted his second score of the game on a pass from Lehrer to make the score 7-5 heading into the final quarter. The Blue Jays, however, scored all five goals in the final period to pull away for the win. Wharton posted a pair of goals, Peck, Max Chautin and Will McCance also scored to round out the scoring in the game.

Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was again sensational in the cage, making 15 saves while allowing 10 goals in 50:40 of action. Defender Justin Schmidt (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) picked up a team-high four ground balls. Grant paced the Mount with two goals while Lehrer had two assists in the contest.

Wharton finished with a game-high four goals while Boland chipped in two goals and four assists in the victory. Christopher (2g, 2a) and Peck (2g, 1a) added multiple-point games as well. Mike Gvozden made six saves in 56:02 while allowing five goals to earn the win.

The Mount returns to action on Friday, May 1, at 4:30 p.m. against Manhattan in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament. The Mount earned the No. 2 seed at the MAAC Tournament, which will be hosted by Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. No. 1 seed Siena faces No. 4 seed Providence in the other semifinal.
