Monteith Sets Record as Oneonta Coasts by New Paltz

SUNY Oneonta freshman Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) scored seven goals while assisting on another in helping to lead the Red Dragons to a 23-1 victory against New Paltz to end the regular season. Monteith's goal output on the day also established a new single season record for goals for the women's lacrosse program, which stood for nearly 25 years.

Her third goal of the game gave her 65, which surpassed the previous record of 64 set back in 1986 by Sue Murray. After today's performance she now has 69 goals with at least one game left to play this Friday in the SUNYAC semifinals against Cortland.

It took a bit to get going, but once Oneonta (10-5/7-2) got rolling there wasn't much New Paltz (2-13/0-9) could do to stop the momentum.

Other players who had big offensive games for Oneonta today included junior Lauren Portnoy (Sea Cliff/North Shore), senior Brianne Ruzek (Mineola/St. Mary Manhasset) and sophomore Rosemarie Fazio (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland). Portnoy registered five goals, Ruzek had a pair of goals and five assists while Fazio had four goals and two assists.

Oneonta's quest for an NCAA berth begins on Friday at Buffalo State against Cortland in the semifinals for the SUNYAC tournament. Oneonta is the No. 3 seed for this year's tournament and will play the second seeded rival Red Dragons at 3:00 p.m.
