No. 7 Princeton Coasts to Win over Loyola
PRINCETON, N.J. (4/29/09) – Three players had four-point efforts as the No. 7-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team coasted to a 13-7 win over No. 16 Loyola at Class of 1952 Stadium on Wednesday, April 29. With the win, the Tigers closed out the 2009 regular season with an 8-0 record at home. This is the eighth time the program finished the regular season with an undefeated home record, the last time coming in 2004.
Senior Holly McGarvie scored four goals, while senior Kristin Schwab tallied three goals and added an assist. Sophomore Lizzy Drumm also collected a hat trick while senior Christine Casaceli had two goals and two assists. Senior Katie Cox also had multiple points with two helpers. Sophomore goalie Erin Tochihara stopped seven saves in the win.
Grace Gavin was Loyola's heavy hitter with four goals and one assist. Colleen O'Keefe chipped in three points with two goals and one assist. The Greyhounds split playing time between two goalies, with Meg Steffe playing the first half and making seven stops. Kerry Stoothoff played the second half and picked up four shots.
Princeton had a 31-17 advantage in shots and a 27-12 edge in ground balls. Draw controls were even with each team picking up 11.
Loyola scored the first goal of the game and tied the game at 2-2 at 19:19, before Princeton started to pull away, scoring four more goals in the first half to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room. The Tigers scored six more in the second half, including a four-goal run over a span on 10 minutes.
Cara Filipelli started the scoring at 28:20 when she put an O'Keefe pass right into the net on the Greyhounds first scoring opportunity. Just over a minute later, Casaceli tied the game when she came off the end line and went right to the goal.
She added another a minute later when an indirect foul was called just outside the 12-meter fan and ran to the goal and with a bounce shot that made its way past Steffe. O'Keefe evened the game at 2-2 at 19:19 when she made her way around the back of the net and slipped a shot by Tochihara.
McGarvie gave Princeton a two-goal cushion with back-to-back goals at 17:33 and 14:59.
Grace cut the lead back to one, 4-3, at 8:47 before the Tigers rattled off the final three goals of the first half. McGarvie collected her third goal of the night at 4:17 after she was heavily defended in front of the net but got a high shot past her defenders and the goalie. Schwab added two goals in the final 1:43 for the 7-3 lead.
Twenty-one seconds into the second half, Grace added her second of the evening. McGarvie scored on an eight-meter opportunity at 26:56 and Schwab picked up a ground ball on a rebound and put it away to give Princeton a 9-4 lead.
Loyola's Grace collected her third goal at 22:36 before Princeton went on a four-goal run to take a 13-5 lead. Senior Anne Murray delivered a terrific pass to Drumm for the first goal, and freshman Cassie Pyle came from behind the back of the cage and wrapped around for a goal. Drumm added two, the second on a fast-break transition.
Gavin and O'Keefe both scored in the final eight minutes to inch its way to 13-7.
Princeton improves to 13-2 overall and will travel to No. 2 Maryland for the final game of the regular season on Saturday, May 2. The opening draw is set for 12:00 p.m.

Gavin's four pushed her 2009 season total to 52, marking the 17th time that a Loyola player has scored 50 or more goals in a season and the first since Kate McHarg recorded 60 in 2006.
