Boston College Edged by Harvard in Season Finale

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team lost to Harvard University in the final second 9-8 in their final game of the season. The Eagles finish the year 9-9 and celebrated their final home game of the season with a tribute to the senior class of 2009, the first four year class to play in the ACC.

Maura Mahoney led BC in scoring with two goals and two assists for four points. Lauren Fitzpatrick led the Eagles in goal scoring with a hat trick in the final game of her BC career.

The Eagles scored the first goal of the game notching a 1-0 lead from freshman Brittany Wilton at 21:52 in the first. Harvard responded at 21:17 to even the score. BC regained the lead at 21:07 with a goal by Lauren Fitzpatrick assisted by fellow senior Jenna McCabe.

Harvard evened the score once again 19:12 to make it a 2-2 game. The Eagles took the lead one again with a free position shot by Maura Mahoney to make it a 3-2 game. The Crimson then went on a five goal run to close out the period and put them ahead 7-3 heading into the half.

The Eagles collected five draw controls and three groundballs, and Katie Monaghan made four saves in the period.

A defensive minded second period followed with the first goal of the period, scored by the Eagles not coming until 19:38 from McCabe with the assist to Mahoney. BC followed up with a goal by Fitzpatrick to begin closing the gap and make it a 7-5 game.

Harvard added a goal at 16:23 to make it 8-5. The scored held with the Crimson leading by three until 2:20 in the period when the Eagles began their revival scoring as part of a three goal streak to tie the score at 8-8 with 30 seconds remaining in the game. It seemed as if the Eagles were going to force overtime, but Harvard scored a goal with one second remaining to give them the 9-8 win.

The Eagles outscored Harvard in the second half, 5-2, collected eight groundballs in the period, and Monaghan made five saves for eight total saves in the loss.
