No. 4 TCNJ Dispatches No. 16 Cortland to Advance

Ewing, NJ ... The College of New Jersey and Gettysburg College will face off in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Regional Championship, as both teams picked up wins in the second round of the tournament on Saturday. The Lions (16-2) defeated SUNY Cortland (14-7) 17-7 in the first game of the day. In the afternoon contest, Gettysburg (15-3) shut down Roanoke (16-5), 15-6.

Earlier this season, TCNJ pulled out a narrow 11-10 overtime victory over the Bullets in Gettysburg. The regional title game will take place at TCNJ on Sunday, May 10, at 1:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the national semifinals slated for Saturday, May 16 at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Salem, VA. That game will be played at 5:00 p.m.

Eight Lions players found the back of net as The College of New Jersey easily defeated the SUNY-Cortland Red Dragons to advance to tomorrow's regional title game against Gettysburg College. Sophomore Alison Jaeger (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) led the Lions with four goals, and junior Lisa Seldeen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) added three.

Cortland jumped out to an early lead three minutes into the action when freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga, NY/Onondaga Central) scored the first of her three goals on the day. Three minutes later, TCNJ senior Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) tied the game at 1-1 when she hit the first of her two goals. Cortland quickly reclaimed the lead though, when Abbott again found the back of the net just one minute later.

It would be the last time Cortland led on the day, as TCNJ senior Rachel Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) scored on two consecutive free-position shots within the next two-and-a-half minutes. Up 3-2 with 20:05 left in the first half, the Lions offense went on the attack while its defense shut the Red Dragons down.

The Lions led 9-4 at the half, and outshot the Red Dragons 32-17 on the day. Cortland didn't help itself, turning the ball over 19 times. With two goals and an assist on the day, Reuther, the 2009 NJAC Midfielder of the Year, brought her career points total to 98.

Also finding the net twice for the Lions were Gordon and freshmen Sara Keating (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) and Jackie Riley (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex). Senior Kelly Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and freshman Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) each added a goal for the Lions.

Cortland's Danielle Torre (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa), who eclipsed the 100-point plateau in the opening round of the tournament, added three goals for the Red Dragons, while sophomore Alyssa Hoover (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) also scored.

It was the second time this season the two teams met. The Lions defeated Cortland 16-10 in March.
