Ray Leads #1 Adelphi Past C.W. Post to D2 Title Game
SALEM, Va. -- Rachel Ray exploded for nine points to lead Adelphi University through the semifinals and into the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship on Sunday in Salem. Ray's eight assists set new single game and single tournament records in NCAA D-II tournament history. Her nine points tie for third in a single game in tournament history.
Ray wasn't the only person finding the record books as teammate Kaitlyn Carter scored six goals, tying for sixth in a single game. C.W. Post goalkeeper, Sam Powers, stopped 14 shots for the second time in the tournament, tying for ninth most in a single game. Her 28 saves through two rounds of action tie for third in a single tournament.
The first half between rivals Adelphi (17-0) and C.W. Post (16-3) remained close throughout as the two squads went into the half tied, 6-6. Two goals by Carter and another from Michelle Ceraso put Adelphi on top, 9-6, a little more than seven minutes into the half. The Pioneers responded with goals from Michelle Fucich and Katie Hogan, but Erica Devito scored her fourth goal of the contest to put the Panthers back on top by two with 19:00 to play.
Kian Lyons and Brianne Jackolski didn't let the lead last long as both found their way past the Adelphi keeper to tie the game at 10-all with 14:50 showing on the clock. Jackolski's mark would be the last for C.W. Post as Adelphi went on a five goal run to end the contest. Carter scored twice to help power the Panthers' finishing stretch.
Ceraso finished with two goals for Adelphi. Holly Burke and Vanessa Sotcheff added one each. Jackolski led C.W. Post with three goals to go with two from Jacklyn Napoli. Hogan, Fucich, Lyons, Ashley Olen and Chelsea Donaldson each scored once.
Sunday's title game marks the first meeting between Lock Haven and Adelphi this season. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. EST at Donald J. Kerr Stadium on the campus of Roanoke College. The game will also be televised live by CBS College Sports.
