Former Navy Great Jim Carrington Passes Away

On June 1, 2009, James H. H. "Jim" Carrington, 84, passed away peacefully at home in Florida surrounded by his beloved family. He was a remarkable athlete, an educator at the highest levels and a successful businessman.

CDR Carrington, a graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover and the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1948, was a six-time, three-sport All-American in football, swimming and lacrosse, earning 13 varsity letters at Fordham, Cornell and Navy. He also was a recipient of the Naval Academy Athletic Association Sword for Athletic Excellence and a member of the Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame.

During his 19 years of commissioned service, he served on the USS Hanson DDR-832 that saw action in the Korean War, the carrier USS Leyte CV-32, and the USS Plymouth Rock LSD-29.

After his Naval career, he completed his studies for a PhD in Business Administration at The American University and joined the faculty there as an Associate Professor. After two years at AU, he transferred to Georgetown University as Director of Budget and Management. His final academic assignment was at George Washington University where he taught small business administration, and wrote the business management text: Command, Control, and Compromise.

On the side, CDR Carrington was a nationally-ranked squash player for 15 years, winning both the national hardball and softball championships, and a World Masters doubles title. His passion for sports led him to coach teams from the grammar school level to the NCAA collegiate level.

A devoted husband and father, a great and fun-loving friend, a learned counselor and tenacious competitor, he was more than anything a good and just man, who will remain a source of inspiration to us all.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Connell Carrington of Sea Girt, NJ, and five children: James H. H. Carrington Jr. of Rome, Italy, Wendy Carrington of Southbury, Conn., Timothy Carrington of Marietta, Ga., Nancy Crown of Winnetka, Ill., Kathleen Anderson of Greer, S.C. There are 10 grandchildren.

The funeral service will take place at St. John the Baptist Church in Atlantic Beach, Fla. on Saturday, June 6 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to AHRC - Association for the Help of Retarded Children - would be gratefully appreciated.
