Inside the Ratings and Rankings: Massachusetts and Maine
By Brett Manney
The last week for high school lacrosse is now upon us, as one team in Massachusetts wrapped up its season and two squads in Maine aim for the state championship. There still could be plenty of movement in the Maine rankings, but in Massachusetts all is said and done as one team breezed through the competition en route to an impressive state championship.
Walpole Rebels (MA)
Final PR: 98.85, Rank: 1
The Rebels capped off their season with a state championship, defeating St. Johns Shrewsbury (PR: 97.6) 17-8 in the title game. The win against the Pioneers was the icing on the cake for the Rebels, earning them 1.225 Quality Win Factor points as their previous high was .250 in their 10-9 overtime win against Reading Memorial (PR: 98.2). Other than their impressive record, the Rebels scored in double digits in every game except their loss to St. John Prep Danvers (PR: 98.5), and never allowed more than nine goals per game. Next year's squad has some tough shoes to fill after the success the Rebels had in 2009.
Portland Bulldogs (ME)
Power Rating: 96.12, Rank: 2
As the season is coming to a close the Bulldogs look to win their remaining two games and finish the season No. 1 in the final state rankings. The Bulldogs' next opponent is Scarborough (PR: 90.5) who they defeated on May 1 by the score of 12-1. If the Bulldogs can win their last two games, they will receive substantial Quality Win Factor Points and possibly move past Yarmouth (PR: 96.3) to end the season as the top-ranked team in the state.
Scarborough Red Storm (ME)
Power Rating: 90.5, Rank: 4
It will be tough for the Red Storm to move past Yarmouth (PR: 96.3) to claim the top spot in the state, but they have a great opportunity to gain Quality Win Factor points against Portland on Wednesday. The Red Storm currently are ranked fourth in the state but capturing the state championship could propel them over Cape Elizabeth (PR: 92.7) with an opportunity at finishing third in the state rankings. This is a huge week for the motivated squad to take the state by storm.
