Copelan Announces First Fairfield Recruiting Class
Fairfield, Conn. - Fairfield University men's lacrosse head coach Andrew Copelan announced his first recruiting class this morning, welcoming 15 student-athletes to the Class of 2013. The group spreads across 10 states, with four attackmen, seven midfielders and four defenders.
"I am pleased to announce our Class of 2013," said Copelan. "I look forward to watching this group develop over the course of their careers at Fairfield University and am excited about what they have the potential to accomplish."
Matt Callahan (Acton, Mass.) will join the Stags defensive unit. He served as a team captain as a senior at Phillips Exeter Academy, where in two years he helped the team to a 25-8 record. He was named a U.S. Lacrosse High School All-America and was selected to the New England Prep East/West All-Star Game.
Kevin Fritts (Dallas, Texas) is slated to compete for playing time on the attack. A Highland Park High School graduate, Fritts scored 105 goals in three varsity seasons, with 61 assists. As a senior he was named First-Team All-State, netting 45 goals with 26 assists.
Marshall Johnson (Canandaigua, N.Y.) will be a part of the Stags midfield this season. A graduate of Canandaigua Academy, where he won 84 percent of his face-offs and scored 41 goals, he led his squad to the 2009 New York State Class 'B' Championship, and was named MVP in the process. He was also an All-America honoree, as a senior, and was named the Greater Rochester Player of the Year.
Kevin Knight (Plymouth, Minn.) will be a part of the Stags midfield in the coming years. A graduate of Wayzata High School, he dished out 154 assists with 11 goals in earning four varsity letters. Over the course of his career he earned All-America, All-State and All-Conference accolades.
Brian Marques (West Simsbury, Conn.) will join the Stags defensive unit. He led the Taft School in ground balls, with 45, in 2009. He graduated from Simsbury High School in 2008, earning two varsity letters in leading the Trojans to 28 wins.
Andrew Nagel (Darnestown, Md.) will play on the attack for the Stags. He graduated from Landon High School, where he earned two varsity letters in lacrosse. He finished an injury shortened senior season with six points, and his varsity career with 18 goals and 12 assists.
Grayson Phillips (Oak Park, Calif.) will join the Stags midfield unit this season. A graduate of Oak Park High School, he earned four varsity letters, and was a sophomore on the 17-0 State Championship team. He won 66 percent of his career face-offs, while scooping up 101 ground balls as a senior.
Tyler Reid (Clinton, Conn.) will be a part of the Stags attack during his career. A graduate of Xavier High School, he tallied 243 career points. As a senior he earned First Team All-State, finishing the year with 35 goals and 35 assists.
Matt Rubertone (Manhasset, N.Y.) is expected to be a member of the Stags defensive unit in the coming seasons. He earned three varsity letters in lacrosse at Manhasset High School, earning All-County honors as a senior. He helped his team to a 20-1 record in 2009, culminating in a New York State Class 'C' Championship.
Mike Sawyer (Summit, N.J.) will look for playing time in the Stags midfield this season. He earned four varsity letters at Delbarton High School, including back-to-back 22-3 seasons the last two years. He led the Green Wave to a pair of Non-Public 'A' State Championships, and a 2009 Gibs Conference title.
