News and Notes from Around the MLL for August 12th

It came down to the final game of the season to figure it all out, but the seeds and pairing for the 2009 New Balance MLL Championship Weekend Presented by Smartlink have now been set. The Denver Outlaws enjoy the #1 overall seed due to their League best 9-3 record, followed by the Toronto Nationals in the #2 seed with an overall record of 7-5. The Long Island Lizards and Boston Cannons both finished the regular season at 6-6, but the Lizards earn the #3 spot due to their three one-goal victories over the Cannons this season, leaving Boston with the #4 seed.

It Had To End Sometime - The longest consecutive game scoring streak came to end on Saturday at Chicago's Soldier Field. Machine attackman Kevin Leveille, who had recorded at least one point in an MLL record 65 consecutive games, was held without a single point versus the Lizards. Guarded by Long Island defenseman Nicky Polanco, this was the first time that Leveille has been held without a point since August 5, 2004 in a game versus the Baltimore Bayhawks.

Power Player - Long Island's Stephen Berger recorded his 9th PPG of the season against the Chicago Machine. This ties the single season MLL record currently held by Mark Millon (2002) and Chicago's Kevin Leveille (2005).

G.I. Joe, Rise of the Walters - One of Toronto's offensive stars, Joe Walters, tallied his 150th point and 49th assist in the Nationals' domination of Denver this past weekend. Walters finished with 2 assists for the evening. He leads the Nationals with 17 assists this season.

Stop Being So Snide - Toronto's face-off specialist Geoff Snider earned his 550th win at the X. Geoff went 18-28 against Denver. For the 2009 regular season, Geoff won 195 draws, a career high for the Toronto player. He was third this season amongst the face-off specialists in the league, but led in points and goals scored.

O'Doyle Rules! Toronto's Colin Doyle had his 50th goal and 10th power play assist this past weekend against the Denver Outlaws. Doyle scored during Toronto's 5-goal run in the second quarter and assisted Merrick Thomson's power play goal on the last tally of the game. Doyle scored 26 points this season, including 13 goals and 13 assists. He scored 2 power play goals and 3 power play assists this season.

It's Merrick, not Maverick - Toronto's Merrick Thomson is about as good at lacrosse as Maverick is at flying. In the Nationals domination of Denver, Toronto's Top Gun scored his 10th power play goal and first shorthanded goal of his career in the second half of Saturday's game. Merrick is second in the League in points scored, but first in goals scored this season.

I've Just Seen A Face (1619 actually) - Peter Vlahakis took his 1600th face-off against Chicago. He is third all-time in career face-off attempts with 1619. Despite a sub-par performance against Doug Shanahan (12-26), Peter is also third all-time in career face-offs won with 930.

No Flakes Here - Long Island's Blake Miller played his 100th regular season game against Chicago. The midfielder recorded a goal and an assist against the Machine. Miller is currently seventh in all-time career goals scored with 193.

This Veteran Is no Clunker - One of Chicago's top veterans Matt Striebel played his 99th game against Long Island. A longtime player for Philadelphia, Striebel is fifth all-time in career games played. He has been a key component to Chicago's offense this season,

Back in...Blue? Chicago Machine's pick up of Doug Shanahan turned out to be worth it. Back in the baby blue jersey, Dough won his 800th faceoff in a losing effort against Long Island. Doug is fourth all-time in career face-off attempts (1578) and wins (401).
