STORRS, Conn. (Aug. 17, 2009) – The University of Connecticut will participate in the first-ever Nick Colleluori Women's Lacrosse Classic on Sept. 26 hosted by Hofstra University at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.

Connecticut alum and Hofstra head coach Abby Morgan has been instrumental in organizing the tournament that will include 12 teams supporting The HEADstrong Foundation, which is dedicated to raise awareness and financial support for blood cancer research.

In addition to Connecticut and Hofstra, the other teams participating are: Albany, Adelphi, Bentley, C.W. Post, Iona, Long Island, Massachusetts, Stonehill as well as two post-collegiate squads in the New York Athletic Club and the Lady Lizards. The four games per team schedule will be announced at a later date. Each team will wear lime green laces during the tournament to show their support.

A variety of items associated with the HEADstrong Foundation will be for sale throughout the tournament with all funds raised going directly to support the foundation.

The HEADstrong Foundation is dedicated to Nick Colleluori's life. Collelurori was a member of the Pride Lacrosse team from 2004 to 2006. He designed the organization's logo while waiting to go into the operating room for a procedure before losing his battle on November 28, 2006. Lacrosse was his passion and as he can no longer carry the ball, his family and friends carry the ball for him.

The HEADstrong Foundation's mission is to generate funds for cancer research, distribute grants and assistance to survivors of blood cancer, provide financial assistance to families that are experiencing the hardships of having a sick family member, and provide scholarships and grants for students with ambitions of entering the medical field.
