Midshipmen Duo Earns IWLCA Academic Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy women's lacrosse seniors Erin Rawlick (Forest Hill, Md.) and Mary Ruttum (Annapolis, Md.) were both recently recognized by the Intercollegiate Womens Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) for their efforts in the classroom over the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Midshipmen duo, which combined to produce 85 goals and 135 points in 2009, was among eight Patriot League student-athletes and 407 nationally from 152 institutions, honored by the IWLCA.

Rawlick, recently elected the Midshipmen's team captain for the upcoming 2010 season, posted a 3.59 grade-point average as an English major during the spring semester. A two-time First-Team All-Patriot League selection, she has led the conference in scoring in each of the last two seasons, most recently producing a team-record 92 points (55 g, 37 a) in '09 the third-highest single-season total in league history.

Entering her senior year at the Academy, Ruttum, meanwhile, owns a 3.67 cumulative grade-point average, including a 3.91 GPA in classes within her systems engineering major. Additionally, she currently serves as Seventh Company Commander and has been named to both the Commandant's and Superintendent's Lists in each of the last five semesters. On the field, Ruttum has been a major contributor in the Navy attack, racking up 67 goals and 97 points over the last two seasons.

All student-athletes were nominated by their institutions and have attained at least junior standing academically. Nominees considered had a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 or were in the top-10 percent of their squad.

The Mids open their fall schedule during the weekend of Oct. 3-4, when it hosts Adelphi, George Washington and Penn State.
