Cornell Lacrosse Announces 2010 Team Captains
ITHACA, N.Y. – At the Cornell University men's lacrosse annual awards banquet, held this morning at the Statler Hotel, head coach Jeff Tambroni announced that seniors Pierce Derkac and Ryan Hurley will serve as team captains for the 2010 season. Tambroni also announced the award winners for the 2009 season.
Derkac, a senior long-pole midfielder from Keswick, Va., became an integral part of the Big Red defense during his junior season, seeing action in all 17 games. He picked up 52 ground balls on the year and caused a team-high 13 turnovers. He was also one of the top scoring long poles in the country with five goals on the season.
Derkac averaged 3.1 ground balls per game, thanks in large part to his role on the team's face-off unit. He had at least four ground balls in six games, including a season-high seven vs. Hobart. Derkac scored a career-best two goals vs. Syracuse on April 7 and Brown on April 25. He also had a goal vs. Hobart.
Hurley, a senior attackman from Eagan, Minn., is a two-time All-American for the Big Red. He was named second-team All-Ivy as a junior after leading the Cornell offense with 45 goals, becoming just the fifth player in Cornell history to register 40 goals in back-to-back seasons. Hurley also chipped in 10 assists for 55 points on the season. He has registered at least one point in his last 32 games and enters the 2010 season with the longest point-scoring streak on the team and the third longest streak in the nation.
Hurley finished the year ranked third in the Ivy League and ninth in the country in goals per game (2.59) and third in the conference and 20th in the country in points per game (3.18 ppg). Hurley also picked up 47 ground balls on the season. The 2009 Hard Hat, Hurley registered his 100th career point with two goals and one assist vs. Syracuse on April 7.
Max Seibald was named the Dr. Ray Van Orman Memorial Award winner as the team's most valuable player. The award was renamed the Dr. Ray Van Orman Memorial Award in 1984 to honor the memory of Dr. Van Orman, an outstanding lacrosse coach at Cornell from 1940-49,
Matt Moyer earned the Lawrence Van Buren Woodworth Memorial Award, given annually to the player who most exemplifies competitive spirit and fair play, as the team's outstanding defensive player.
The Joe Phillip Memorial Award, which goes to the team's offensive MVP, was awarded to Rob Pannell. The award is given annually to the person who contributed to the overall team effort, in grateful memory of Phillip, whose humor, inspiration and service to Cornell lacrosse will never be forgotten.
Kyle Doctor earned the J.E.B. Sportsmanship Award for combining the qualities of lacrosse ability, leadership, fairness, courteous relations and graceful acceptance of results on and off the playing field.
The C.F. Morse Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, given annually to the player who combines the physical attributes of a Spartan and the scholar achievements of an Athenian, was awarded to Pat Kirwan.
The LaFrance award, given to the senior who combines mental and physical toughness, along with humor and bravery, despite injury, was awarded to John Glynn.
Pierce Derkac took home the Charlie Hustle Award. Given in memory of Charles W. Cayten to the player who has displayed outstanding hustle on the practice and game fields, a leader in the pursuit of ground balls in relation to playing time.
Chris Finn earned the Al 'Junior' Kelz - Mike Herriott Award as the team's outstanding senior player. The award was established by the late R.L. Cullen in memory of Junior Kelz and Mike Herriott, who were tragically killed while on a lacrosse scouting trip in 1965.
