Fratzke, Taylor, McAfee Named 2010 Towson Captains
TOWSON, Md. – Senior midfielders Hillary Fratzke (Queen Anne's County H.S./Centreville, Md.), Lauren McAfee (Moorestown H.S./Moorestown, N.J.) and Steph Taylor (Cocalico H.S./Denver, Pa.) have been selected to serve as the team captains for the 2010 Towson University women's lacrosse team, it has been announced by Coach Missy Doherty.
Fratzke is the first player in team history to serve as a captain for three consecutive years while McAfee and Taylor will be captains for the first time.
"We have an amazing group of leaders on this team this year and Steph, Lauren and Hillary are three great examples of what Towson Lacrosse is all about," Doherty says. "We are proud to have them as our 2010 captains."
One of the Tigers' career leaders in several categories, Fratzke missed a majority of last year after suffering an injury in the Tigers' game against Loyola on March 7 and earned a medical redshirt for the season. With 148 goals and 203 points, she ranks fourth in school history in both categories. In addition, she is the school's career leader with 257 draw controls and 111 caused turnovers.
During her junior season, Fratzke was named as the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year after leading the CAA in points, draw controls, ground balls and caused turnovers. With 62 goals and 24 assists, she recorded the second-highest single-season point total in school history while helping the Tigers to the CAA title.
Fratzke has recorded a point in all 54 games of her college career and will enter the 2010 season with a streak of 48 consecutive games with a goal, which is the longest active streak in NCAA Division I.
A three-year letter winner for the Tigers, McAfee has played in 52 career games and has scored 24 goals with 7 assists. As a junior, she scored 10 goals along with an assist in 18 games while contributing 12 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.
During her sophomore campaign, McAfee played in all 19 games and scored nine goals with five assists. In the Tigers' win over UMBC, she recorded the first "hat trick" of her college career with a three-goal effort against the Retrievers. She also had a career-high four points in the Tigers' victory over George Washington.
Taylor had an outstanding junior season last year and was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team after scoring seven goals in the Tigers' two games. Against William & Mary in the CAA semi-finals, Taylor matched her career high by scoring four goals as the Tigers defeated the top-seeded Tribe by a 15-10 margin. She also contributed three goals in the Tigers' championship game victory over Delaware.
A starter in 18 of the Tigers' 19 games last year, Taylor was the Tigers' fifth-leading scorer with 19 goals and 6 assists. She also ranked third on the team with 34 ground balls and was second on the team with 28 caused turnovers.
An outstanding leader, Taylor is serving as the vice president of Towson University's Student-Athlete Advisory Council during the 2009-10 academic year.
The Tigers posted a 13-6 record and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year while winning their third CAA title in five years.
