St. John's Set for 12th Annual Lacrosse for Leukemia

QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2009) – The St. John's men's lacrosse team will travel to Bel Air, Md. to take part in the 12th annual Price Modern Lacrosse for Leukemia Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The tournament will feature six men's and 13 women's lacrosse teams from around the country. The event will be held at Cedar Lane Regional Park starting at 8:30 a.m. St. John's will compete in the afternoon set of games with a 12:50 p.m. game against UMBC, followed by a 2:25 p.m. bout against Towson.

Each team will be paired with an "honorary captain," a child who is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia. This year, St. John's will team with 15-year old Alex Marinelli from Hagerstown, Md. Marinelli has been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, a rare form of the disease that, with treatment, currently allows Alex to live a normal life.

The contests will consist of four 20-minute running time quarters with a one- to two-minute break between each quarter, including halftime. There will be ten minutes in between each game.

The Lacrosse for Leukemia Tournament benefits the Maryland chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which raises money to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

In addition to the UMBC and Towson, this year's event will feature men's teams from Mt. Saint Mary's, Washington College, and 2009 opponent Air Force Academy. The 2009 tournament will also feature women's teams from American, Duke, Duquesne, James Madison, Johns Hopkins, LaSalle, Loyola, Maryland, Mount St. Mary's, Rutgers, Towson, UMBC, and Temple.
