Seibald, McClay Named to US Team for World Cup

BALTIMORE -- US Lacrosse announced Monday the final roster for the 2010 U.S. men's national team and Cornell alumni Ryan McClay '03 and Max Seibald '09 have made the squad. The training team roster of 41 was narrowed down to the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL)-mandated size of 23 players after three fall exhibition weekends in West Point, N.Y., Annapolis, Md. and Stony Brook, N.Y. All 23 players, selected by the coaching staff, will compete in the FIL World Championship in Manchester, England from July 14-24, 2010.

"Our coaching staff was thrilled to learn of the news regarding Max and Ryan making the 2010 US team," said head coach Jeff Tambroni. "They are two worthy young men who have worked so hard to play at the game's highest level and they are both wonderful ambassadors of the game and of Cornell. Our program could not be more proud."

McClay, an alternate on the 2006 team, was a member of the 2002 US team that won a gold medal in Australia. Following the championships, he was named the Most Valuable Defenseman as the youngest player on the U.S. team. One of only three four-time All-Americans in Cornell history, McClay was a first-team selection on defense as a junior and senior. A first-team All-Ivy selection in both 2002 and 2003, he was also named the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2003. McClay was the No. 5 selection by the New Jersey Pride in the 2003 MLL Draft and currently plays for the Boston Cannons.

Seibald finished his playing career at Cornell as the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, as well as the winner of both the USILA Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award, for the Outstanding DI Player of the Year, and the USILA Lt. Donald MacLaughlin Jr. Award, for the Outstanding Midfielder of the Year. One of the recent greats in a tradition-rich lacrosse program, Seibald became one of just three Cornell players to earn All-American honors four times during their career. He is also the only men's lacrosse player in the history of the Ivy League to be named a four-team first-team All-Ivy selection. He racked up 141 career points, the most ever by a Big Red midfielder, and was one of the most consistent players in the country, having registered at least one point in 59 of his 62 career games. Seibald was taken second overall in the 2009 MLL Draft by the Denver Outlaws and was named an All-Star in his first season before helping the team to an appearance in the 2009 MLL Championships.

"We are extremely pleased with the selection process," said Cornell alumni Howie Borkan '81, who serves as the chair of the U.S. Lacrosse men's national teams committee. "The tryouts, the fall clinics and games have been well received and have provided the coaching staff with the opportunity to select the best team possible."

Since the first recognized international championship in 1967, the U.S. has won eight gold medals, most recently in 2002.

The team's first appearance together will be at the 2010 US Lacrosse National Convention in Baltimore, Md., Jan. 15-17, followed by their first on-field competition against Duke and Army at the 2010 Champion Challenge at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 30-31.
