Occidental Names First Captains in Program History

LOS ANGELES, Calif. As the Tigers prepare to take to the field for the first time as an intercollegiate sport at Occidental College, head coach Michele Uhlfelder has announced that Emily Phillips and Matalie Morison will serve as the 2010 captains.

As seniors, who have played club lacrosse for the Black and Orange during the last three years, Phillips and Morison were a sure fit to take on the role. Phillips, a Sociology major from Redmond, Wash. and Morison a Marine Biology major from Mont Vernon, NH, have each started every game the last three spring seasons for the Tigers.

"I am very excited that our two seniors have been chosen to serve as captains this season," said head coach, Michele Uhlfelder. "They have shown the commitment, work ethic, and leadership that we are proud to have in place for our inaugural season. Both have great energy, and are extremely excited to have the opportunity to compete as a Division III program. They will work hard and represent us well as we move toward an exciting future."

While Morison was named WWLL DII All-League as a center and midfielder, Phillips was a team captain in high school and patrols the backfield for the Tigers as a defender.

Occidental will open their season on Feb. 24 when they travel to the University of Redlands. The home opener will take place the following weekend, Feb. 27, when the Tigers host the Whittier College Poets on Patterson Field at 1:00 p.m.
