Oregon Opens PNCLL Play with Victory over Montana

Eugene, OR. The University of Oregon Ducks (9) opened up PNCLL Division 1 play with a home victory over the visiting Montana Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon by a score of 21-4. On what proved to be a sunny day with a large crowd looking on, the Ducks put 34 shots on target and provided a steady flow of offense throughout the contest.

Starting out slow, the Ducks were withheld by an early penalty, and the Grizzlies went ahead in the first quarter, 2-1. The score turned quickly when Oregon's junior midfielder, Bo Montagne, won the face off and took it coast-to-coast to even up the game at 2-2. Montagne and fellow midfielder, Brett Whyte, showed their strength in the face-off game by combining for over 20 wins on the day.

The Ducks never looked back, holding the Grizzlies scoreless for the rest of the half and outscoring Montana 7-0 in the second quarter. Oregon's depth and speed proved to be too much for Montana, as the Grizzlies struggled to get the ball up the field all game. Oregon's defense provided a good ride for the duration of the contest, holding the Grizzlies scoreless again in the third quarter. The Ducks scored five goals in the period. In the fourth, the Ducks outscored Montana 5-2 to make a final score of 21-4.

Top performers on the day were junior attack men Max Schlesinger (four goals, one assist) and Justin Eckenroad (three goals), senior midfielder Chris Brown (two goals, one assist), and junior midfielder Kevin Clark (two goals, two assists). Senior captain Justin Blackmore added two goals and two assists on the day.

Next up for the Ducks is a full week of practice in Eugene, followed by a weekend non-divisional contest against Santa Clara University at home. The Broncos head to Eugene fresh off a triple overtime win over Sonoma State (18) with a score of 10-9.

The Ducks and Broncos are scheduled to face-off at the Oregon Nex-Turf field at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27.
