Griffins Open Season with Win Over Belmont Abbey

The Griffin men's lacrosse team opened their 2010 season with a 10-9 win over Belmont Abbey in a game played at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA.

The Griffins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead just over a minute into the contest on goals by Joel Zalesky and Justin Menefee. Abbey responded just a minute later to make it 2-1 and the rest of the period went by scoreless.

Abbey opened the second with two goals to take a 3-2 lead before Zalesky added two more before the half to give SHU a 4-3 halftime lead. The Griffins extended their lead to 6-4 after the third before a wild fourth period that featured nine goals. Abbey tied the game at 6 with two quick fourth quarter goals. Zalesky answered right back just 4 seconds later to give the Griffins a 7-6 lead with 10:38 to play.

Four minutes later Abbey tied it at 7 before the Griffins scored the next two to make it 9-7 with under five minutes to play. Abbey made it 9-8 with a goal with 1:51 to play but Zalesky recorded his fifth goal of the game with 33 seconds to play to make it 10-8. Abbey closed out the scoring with a goal at 26 seconds.

Joel Zalesky led the Griffins offense with 5 goals and 1 assist. Jimmy Delaney added 2 goals and 1 assist, while Greg Chaples had 1 goal and 1 assist. Justin Menefee and Matt Bertrand had 1 goal apiece and Dan Ruby added 1 assist. Goalie Corey Struss was spectacular in net making 21 saves. SHU will next travel to C.W. Post on March 6th.
