Eastern/Southern Games of the Week, February 26-March 2

Several states in the South have started their high school lacrosse season, and the great match-ups are already beginning. Here are some of the best, from South Carolina to Kentucky to Florida.

February 26
Hillcrest Rams (SC) vs. Riverside Warriors (SC)
Riverside fell just short of the state title game last year, falling to eventual state champion Greenville in the semifinals. The Warriors are off to a good start in 2010, topping Wade Hampton 24-1 in the opener. Hillcrest is another team that finished in the top five. The Rams look to get into last season's form after dropping the opener 13-4 to Eastside.

February 27
Lovett Lions (GA) vs. Wesleyan Wolves (GA)
Both teams will be expected to make a run for the state title this season. Lovett is the defending state champion, while Wesleyan dropped just two games last season. Each cruised to easy wins in their season openers. Watch for a high-scoring game.

St. Xavier Tigers (KY) vs. Montgomery Bell Academy Big Red (TN)
The season opener for both teams. St. Xavier has the task of replacing all-everything middie Chase Carraro. Look for Peter Murphy at attack to have a big year for the Tigers. MBA tries to take that next step in 2010 and reach the finals. Matt Bracy leads the midfield for the Big Red.

March 2
Lake Highland Prep Highlanders (FL) vs. Bishop Moore Hornets (FL)
Bishop Moore's season ended with an 8-7 loss to Lake Highland in the playoffs last year. The Hornets are off to a 4-0 start, all convincing wins. The Highlanders advanced to the state title game last season and seem to have picked up where they left off with their 5-0 start.

Charlotte Catholic Cougars (NC) vs. Providence Day Chargers (NC)
Providence Day took the lone meeting last season, 11-8. Kevin Sherrill will provide a spark from the midfield for the Chargers. Catholic returns as the class 3A/2A state champion. Mike Italiano and Matt Sawyer are two big-time scorers for the Cougars.
