No. 6 Denison Routs Fontbonne to Start Season 2-0

The Big Red scored 14 first half goals off only 31 shots while committing just three turnovers in the first 30 minutes of play. That, combined with a 9-goal second half, would result in a 23-1 victory over Fontbonne University from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

The sixth-ranked Big Red got a career-high five goals from junior attack Kyle Brown (Glenview, Ill./New Trier). Starting attack Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) added four first-half goals and one assist while senior Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) chalked up three goals and one assist. For Burton, that gives him a team-high seven goals on the season and puts him just 12 goals away from breaking the school's all-time scoring record held by Andy John.

On Wednesday against Mount St. Joseph, Denison struggled a bit at the face-off X, winning just 10 of 24. Today, they rebounded by winning 21 of 28 face-off's as senior Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) was back to his dominating self, going 14 of 16 with three ground balls. On the day, the Big Red gobbled up 50 ground balls while causing 13 of Fontbonne's 24 turnovers. Senior long pole Cy Ryan (Palm Beach, Fla./Westminster School) finished with six ground balls and sophomore middie Matt Verklin (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) led the team with eight.

Just like Wednesday's opener, 11 players got in the scoring column for DU. Other multi-goal scorers were John Dionne (Scottsdale, Ariz./Western Reserve Academy), Alex Hardt (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal) and Colin Molloy (Stamford, Conn./Fairfield Prep). Cory Couture (San Diego, Calif./Coronado) and Porter McKay (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) led the team with three assists apiece.

Overall, DU outshot Fontbonne 56-14 and were 12 of 13 when clearing the ball. Sophomore goalie Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) ended the day with five saves in 37 minutes. Dan Wallace (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) posted four saves in 14 minutes of play in the second half.

Denison (2-0) will return to action on Saturday (March 13) when they take on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at 4:00 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J.
