No. 3 NYIT Rallies Past Saint Anselm for One-Goal Victory

Old Westbury, N.Y. (February 28) -- In the 2010 season opener, the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-9 final at No. 3 ranked NYIT in non-conference action in Old Westbury, N.Y. The Hawks are 0-1 on the season, while the Bears improve to 1-0 overall.

The Bears jumped on top just 10 seconds into the game on a goal by Austin Carino and the scored stayed at 1-0 until the final minute of the first quarter when Ryan Henry (Norwood, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season to tie things at 1-1 after one quarter. NYIT came out firing to start the second behind two goals from Carino and a goal by Ryan Baganasco for a 4-1 lead. Jeff Dunkle (Exeter, N.H.) and Dan Stefanini (Hopkinton, Mass.) both scored though late in the first half though and it was a 4-3 NYIT lead at the break.

Dunkle came out in the third quarter to tie the game at 4-4. The two teams traded goals before Colin Lacey (South Hadley, Mass.) gave the Hawks their first lead of the game with 1:51 left in the third, a goal that was unassisted. Carino scored his fourth goal of the contest for NYIT and the two headed into the fourth tied at six.

Ben Severance (Rumson, N.J.) and Justin Hall (Sudbury, Mass.) scored the first two of the final quarter and it was the Hawks that jumped out to the 8-6 lead and seemed poised for the upset. NYIT tallied the next three to take a 9-8 lead, but the Hawks came right back with 1:49 left as Conor O'Donnell (Smithfield, R.I.) scored his first career goal, assisted by senior Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, Mass.). The Hawks could not hang on though as Carino scored his fifth and final goal of the contest with 55 seconds left to give the Bears the win in the season opener for both teams.

Pat Acone (Bow, N.H.)in made nine saves in net for the Hawks, while Chris Powers turned aside nine shots in the win for the Bears. Dunkle led the Hawks with a hat trick, along with six other players with single goals. Carino led NYIT with a five-goal afternoon on 10 shots on goal.

Saint Anselm is back in action on Saturday, March 6th as the Hawks travel to Becker College for a 1:00 p.m. start.
