Tigers Open Season with Victory over Redlands

IRVING, Texas The Colorado College women's lacrosse team won its sixth-consecutive season opener with a 15-7 victory over West Region rival University of Redlands on Sunday afternoon.

It marked the third time since 2004 that CC defeated the Bulldogs in the first game of the season.

Leslie Jacoby scored twice during a 5-0 run that put the Tigers up 6-1 with 6:51 remaining in the first half and UR never got closer than four goals the rest of the way.

Gioia Garden scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 6:07 into the second half.

Christy Smith and Katie Colasurdo scored 50 seconds apart to trim CC's lead to 8-4 with 21:07 still to play, but the Tigers scored seven of the next nine goals to build their biggest lead of the game at 15-6 with 7:06 remaining.

The game marked a successful debut for Colorado College's heralded freshman class, which accounted for five goals and an assist. Isabel Gary struck for three goals and added an assist inside the final 12:14.

A total of 11 players found the net for CC. Grace Maloney had a pair of scores, while Garden and Marissa McGrann each had a goal and two assists. Ginna Oates and Sarah Phillips also tallied the first of their careers.

First-year goaltender Abby Fink made 14 saves, including eight during the second half.

The Tigers held Smith to three scores after she averaged seven goals and an assist in the two most recent games between the West Region rivals. Colasurdo added a pair of markers.

Ana Martinez stopped eight shots for the Bulldogs, who were out-shot 30-23.

CC converted on four of six free-position shots, while Redlands was 1 for 2.

The Tigers converted 18 turnovers, compared to only nine for UR.

Colorado College returns to action on Monday against Lycoming College in a neutral-site game at the University of Dallas.
