Visiting Adrian Runs Past Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. Ryan Knautz scored five goals and D.J. Clevely added two scores and five assists in visiting Adrian College's 17-9 lacrosse victory at Guilford College Tuesday afternoon.

Knautz opened the game's scoring 1:28 into the match and was one of three Bulldogs with three first-half goals. After the Quakers' Daniel Dowd made it a 2-1 game with 8:04 left in the quarter, Adrian scored the next nine goals and led, 11-1, at halftime. Clevely had two goals and two assists at the break and teammate David Monroe also tallied twice.

Adrian's lead swelled to 16-4 early in the fourth quarter as Knautz netted three goals in the first 15:10 of the second half. Guilford reeled off five straight scores to make it a 16-9 game with 5:01 remaining before the Bulldogs' Mitch Barnard closed out the scoring with his second goal of the day.

Monroe finished with three goals, two assists and four ground balls. Donald Nowicki struck twice and was one of Adrian's eight different goal scorers. The Bulldogs (2-0) dominated face-offs where Trevor Synek won 12 of 16 draws and Ryan Werhame won nine of 12. Synek and Sam Alden shared game-high honors with six ground balls apiece. Three goalies combined to make seven saves in goal, including starter Pat Gaeger, who had three stops in just under 40 minutes of action.

Dowd's three goals paced the Quakers (0-5), who were outshot, 44-27. Jake Beneke added five points on two goals and three assists. Ken Keesee contributed two fourth-quarter scores for Guilford. Mark Guillen made 11 saves in goal

Guilford returns to action Thursday (3/11) against Carthage College at 4:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
