Clark's Four Goals not Enough as Wagner Falls to Siena
Staten Island, NY – Sophomore midfielder Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) matched her career high with four goals and senior goalie Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) had 14 saves, but it was not enough as Siena held on for a 12-10 victory over the Seahawks.
Wagner overcame an early 2-1 deficit with goals from Clark, junior attacker Karen Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), and senior midfielder Krista Malayter to take a 4-2 lead. The Saints responded with seven unanswered goals, bridging the first and second halves, in building a seemingly comfortable 9-4 lead.
But the Seahawks had other ideas as Wagner went on a 5-1 scoring spree to draw to within one goal at 10-9 with 11:02 play as sophomore attacker Lauren Petrik (Syracuse, NY/Baldwinsville) hit Annie O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) in stride and the freshman attacker buried the shot.
Kristin McMillan scored an unassisted goal for Siena which put the Saints on top 11-9 at the 8:44 mark. With 4:33 to play in the game, sophomore midfielder Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/Westview) scored on a free position attempt to make it a one-goal game again at 11-10. The Saints then went back on top 12-10 on a goal by Erin Hepper with 2:48 left and held on for the victory.
Garces had two goals on the afternoon while Malayter, O'Connor, Vitkus and junior attacker Dana Marchitelli (Annapolis, MD/South River) each tallied one goal apiece for the Seahawks.
Siena held a 34-21 edge in shots, led in draw controls 17-7 and in ground balls 13-8.
Wagner is next in action on Saturday, March 13 when the Seahawks travel to LeMoyne College in a noon start.
