Hartwick Drops Wells to Open Season with Win

ONEONTA, NY Eight different players registered at least a goal as the Hartwick College women's lacrosse team opened the 2010 season with an 11-9 win over visiting Wells College Wednesday at Wright Stadium. It marks the first time in the last four seasons the Hawks have begun the year with a victory.

Hartwick was led by junior Tiffanie Bishop (Shoreham, VT/Middlebury), and sophomores Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), and Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon). All three players scored twice for the Hawks.

Sarah Allen and Emily Lotkowitcz accounted for virtually all of the Wells offense. Allen scored five goals on the day for the Express and Lotkowitcz added three scores and three assists.

Sophomore Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland) opened the scoring for Hartwick 1:46 into the game, but Wells quickly took a 2-1 lead as Allen netted her first of the game and Lotkowitcz added a goal in a 2:22 span.

The Hawks, however, would score five of the game's next six goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. LaVaute scored for the Hawks at the 21:27 mark and freshman Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) gave 'Wick the advantage for good 1:04 later. Kennedy made it 4-2, and after an Allen tally brought the Express closer, LaVaute and Bishop each scored for 'Wick to close out the scoring in the first 30 minutes.

Hartwick opened up its biggest lead of the game (7-3) 5:40 into the second half as freshman Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harbor Fields) got on the board for the first time in a Hartwick uniform off an assist from Walsh. The Express would then chip away at the lead scoring three straight goals over the next six and a half minutes to make it a one-goal game, 7-6, with 17:50 to play.

The Blue and White regrouped and scored the next three goals to pull away. Bishop registered her second of the day, freshman Ryan McGovern (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) scored on a free-position shot for her first career tally, and sophomore Emily Piedigrossi (Cortland, NY/Cortland) netted her first goal of the year all within a five-minute span to open up a 10-6 margin for the Hawks.

The Express got two back scoring with 8:07 remaining and 5:55 left to cut the lead to two goals, but Kennedy tallied on a rebound after LaVaute hit the post to give Hartwick some breathing room, 11-8, with under five minutes showing on the clock. Lotkowitcz closed out the scoring with 3:15 to play and Hartwick ran out the rest of the clock to earn the win.

The Hawks finished with a 31-17 edge in shots for the game. They also won the ground ball battle earning 26 to the Express' 16. Goalie Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) stopped four shots in the Hartwick cage. Wells' keeper Elizabeth Barclay made 10 saves.

Lotkowitcz ended the contest with game-highs of seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Bishop grabbed a team-best six ground balls for 'Wick. LaVaute and Piedigrossi each nabbed three draws, and junior Bianca Gianfrate (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) caused a game-high six turnovers and added four ground balls.

The Hawks are back at Wright Stadium on Friday as they host Skidmore at 4:00 p.m.
