Roger Williams Defeats Nichols in Hawks' Opener

DUDLEY, Mass. (March 11) Junior attacker Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) recorded eight points on five goals and three assists to lead the Roger Williams women's lacrosse team to a 17-2 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory at Nichols College Thursday afternoon. It marked the season opener for the Hawks, and the second game on the year for the Bison, who dip to 0-2 on the year.

Senior Natasha Billie (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) added four goals and Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) chipped in with three goals and an assist for the Hawks.

Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) and Brittany Tremont (Guilford, Conn.) each scored for the Bison.

Delia and Halliday opened the scoring for the Hawks with goals 26 seconds apart before Forand cut the visitors' lead in half at 7:03 of the opening frame. Roger Williams then went on the score eight-straight goals, sparked by two from Halliday, the first of which came while the Hawks were down a player.

Billie added a pair less than 30 second apart prior to the midpoint of the stanza, the first on a free-position goal, and pushed Roger Williams's lead to 7-1. Goals from Halliday, Annie Alvord (Yorktown, N.Y.) and Delia put the Hawks up by nine before Nichols' Tremont scooped up a draw control and sprinted down the field for an unassisted score at 17:51.

With a 10-2 score in hand, Roger Williams added two more from Dana Wilfahrt (Hamilton, Mass.) before the first half ended to carry a 12-2 lead into the break.

Bille opened the second half with a pair of goals, which were followed at the midpoint by a score from Lauren Ferri (Northport, N.Y.) at 13:42. Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.) scored at 18:58 and Halliday capped the scoring with just over five minutes to play.

Hawks netminder Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) made one save in 54 minutes before giving way to Justine Sullivan (Norwell, Mass.), who finished the game with two saves. Nichols goalkeeper Mary Michaud (Agawam, Mass.) made 22 saves in the loss.

The Hawks finished 8 for 9 in clears and held Nichols to 4 for 17. The Hawks led in draw controls, 15-6, led by seven from Ferri.

Nichols is idle until a March 22nd home game against Daniel Webster at 7:00 p.m. that continues the Bison's four-game homestand. Roger Williams travels to Eastern Connecticut State for a 1:00 p.m. game on March 20th.
