Dominican University No Match for Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, NY - The Adelphi University men's lacrosse team hosted the Penguins from Dominican University (CA) this afternoon on Competition Field in its season-opener. The Panthers jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back en route to the 17-3 victory.

Adelphi started the scoring early, with 12:30 remaining in the first quarter, when Jonathan Baron found freshman Connor McCann for his first collegiate goal. McCann would tally his second score of the game, this time with 10:09 on the clock, unassisted. Cam Evangelho would get the Penguins on the board on an unassisted score with 8:15 left.

The Panthers would come out in the second period and find the back of the net eight times. McCann would add two more scores in the quarter, while sophomore Joe Vitale scored a goal and added two helpers. AU would tack on four more goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 16-1 lead. Senior William Bushell would record two of the four Panther goals.

With 10:34 remaining in the final qaurter, freshman Chris Aiello would take a feed from sophomore Anthony Caponi to score the final Panther goal. Adelphi held the advantage in shots, 45-22, and in ground balls, 46-17.

For the Panthers, Vitale recorded four assists to go along with one goal, while McCann scored four goals and gave out one assist. Senior Kevin Kemp ended the day with four points on three goals and one helper. Seniors Zachary Bates and Devin Schneiderbauer each set aside four shots in net.

For the Penguins, Kyle Mitchell, Zach Rodriguez, and Evangelho all scored a goal each in the loss. Sam Darrow recorded 12 saves in one half of action.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 13 when they host Dowling College at 1:00 p.m. on Competition Field.

GARDEN CITY, NY - The Dominican University of California men's lacrosse team was outshot 45-22 by Adelphi University and it led to a 17-3 Penguin loss on Thursday afternoon.

The Panthers began their season opener by scoring the game's first three goals. Cam Evangelho scored with 8:15 in the first to get Dominican (1-5) on the scoreboard. Adelphi clamped down though and held Dominican scoreless for the entire second and third quarters while racking up 14 unanswered goals.

The Penguins showed signs of life in the game's final six minutes, netting a goal by Kyle Mitchell while a man-up and another goal by Zach Rodriguez from Jim Little.

Sam Darrow made eight saves but was charged with the loss. He was relieved by Ryan Williams in the second half. Williams made five saves while allowing five goals.

Adelphi won 20 of 24 faceoffs and got to more ground balls, scooping up 46 to the Penguins' 17.

Dominican wraps up its four-game trek against East Coast programs on Saturday, March 13 when the Penguins head to Mercy College. The game will be played at Mountain Lakes HS in Mountain Lakes, NJ. Faceoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. Eastern/3:00 p.m. Pacific.
