Saint Anselm Downs Rival Southern New Hampshire

Manchester, N.H. (March 13) -- Senior Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, Mass.) gave Saint Anselm an early 1-0 lead at Southern New Hampshire, as the Hawks never trailed before coming away with a 9-6 Northeast-10 victory over the Penmen at Larkin Field.

O'Connell scored the man-up goal with 12:41 left in first for the early Hawk lead before Andrew Brown scored a man-up goal for the Penmen to tie things at 1-1 just 48 seconds later. Tied at 2-2 later in the second quarter. freshman Conor O'Donnell (Smithfield, R.I.) and senior Ryan McDonald (Bow, N.H.) scored to close out the first half with a 4-2 lead.

In the second half, the Penmen tied the game at 5-5, capped by a man-up goal from Terrence Nash with 14:38 left in the third. It was nearly all Saint Anselm from that point on as two goals from O'Donnell and one each from McDonald and Johnny Deyeso (Londonderry, N.H.), made it a 9-5 game late in the fourth. Brown scored an unassisted tally with 43 seconds left to account for the 9-6 final.

Pat Acone (Bow, N.H.) turned aside 16 shots for the Hawks to pick up the win, while Eric Gunst made 18 saves in the defeat.

Saint Anselm improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast-10 with the win. The Hawks are back in action on Thursday afternoon as the Hawks host Molloy College at the Derryfield School in Manchester for a 4:00 p.m. start.
